What is Sexual Assault
Sexual assault refers to sexual contact without consent. Forms of sexual assault include rape, sexual abuse, attempted rape, and unwanted sexual touching. Sexual assault may, but need not, refer to sexual penetration, which includes intercourse, oral sex, or anal penetration. Sexual assault also includes conduct that involves any unwanted touching or fondling of the genitals or breasts of the victim. Date or acquaintance rape is sexual assault.
Distinguishing the Difference Between Consensual
Sex and Date Rape
- It is never acceptable to use force in sexual situations, no matter what the circumstances.
- It is never acceptable to have sex with someone who is unable for any reason---including the effects of alcohol, drugs, or assault---to knowingly/willingly consent.
- It is never acceptable to use subtle (or not so subtle) verbal or physical cues to coerce or trick someone into having sex.
- NO, whether stated softly or loudly, verbally, or with a shake of the head, means STOP!
- It is never acceptable to automatically assume that a woman wants to have sex because she is drinking heavily, dresses in a certain way, or agrees to go to someone’s room.
- It is never acceptable to assume that someone is willing to have sex just because that person has had sex before.
