Health Insurance Selection Process

Health insurance is required for all full-time students. Each year, all matriculated full-time students must complete the online Health Insurance Selection Process regardless of their insurance coverage. There are four health insurance options for full-time students:
  • Option 1: Keep my own insurance coverage.
  • Option 2: Enroll in the University sponsored Excellus BlueCross BlueShield (BCBS) insurance plan for individual students.
  • Option 3: Enroll myself & a spouse/domestic partner in the University sponsored Excellus BlueCross BlueShield (BCBS) insurance plan for students.
  • Option 4: Enroll in the University High Deductible Family Insurance plan through Aetna.

Completing the Health Insurance Selection Process

You will need your UR Net ID and password to complete the selection process. If you are waiving the University sponsored insurance, have your insurance card handy in order to provide the required information about your coverage. When you have completed the process, the system will confirm your insurance selection. You may find the list of Frequently Asked Questions helpful.
  • Go to the online Health Insurance Selection Process
  • Enter your UR Net ID and password.
  • Select your insurance option.
  • Hit "Continue" at the bottom of the screen.
  • Enter information in the fields noted with an *.
  • The system will confirm your insurance selection. You may want to print a copy of this page for your records.

Students who have not completed the Health Insurance Selection Process will receive reminder e-mail messages until they complete the selection process. If you receive an e-mail reminder and believe you have already completed the selection process, you can verify that you successfully selected your insurance for 2009-2010 by re-entering the Health Insurance Selection Process. The system will confirm your selection and ask if you would like to make a change. That is your confirmation that you completed the selection process. If you continue to receive reminders by e-mail, you may want to contact the UHS Insurance Advisor (see contact information below) to confirm that we have the correct information for you.

Suggested Dates for Completing the Health
    Insurance Selection Process

Students must complete the Health Insurance Selection Process prior to the start of classes. The following dates are recommended to assure correct billing on the first tuition bill:

April 15 Students beginning full-time in May
June 30 All full-time undergraduate students
July 31 Incoming first year medical students
August 31 Graduate Students & Returning Medical Students
Dec. 15 Students beginning in January

Changing Your Insurance Selection

If you should need to change your insurance option during the year, you can re-enter the Health Insurance Selection Process to make the change. Any change you make during the year will take effect on the first of the month after you have submitted the change on-line. You will be charged a pro-rated fee based on the number of months of coverage. The fee will be charged to your tuition bill.
