Pharmacy Discount Program
University of Rochester students can purchase a pharmacy discount card through the Vital Savingssm on Pharmacy Discount Program, a program managed by The Chickering Group, a subsidiary of the Aetna Insurance Company. This program can help students reduce the cost of prescription medications if they do not have alternative prescription drug coverage. Students do not need to subscribe to any other Chickering or Aetna health insurance plan to qualify. This program is not recommended to students with prescription drug benefits on an existing health insurance policy.
The cost of the card is $25 for an individual student and slightly more to cover a spouse and/or children. For enrollment information, go to www.chickering.com/schools/urochester/ or call 1-877-437-6480. See Questions and Answers for answers to the most frequently asked questions. Coverage is from September 1 through August 31.
Students present the card to a participating pharmacy and receive a discounted price on prescription medications. Savings average 39% on brand name drugs and 10% on generic preparations. Final prices vary by pharmacy and location. The Strong Memorial Hospital Outpatient Pharmacy and the CVS at Elmwood and Mt. Hope Avenues are among the approximately fifty pharmacies within five miles of campus.
The prescription drug card cannot be used to purchase prescription medications sold at UHS offices. Students who choose to purchase medications from UHS can usually purchase them at a lower cost than is available using the prescription drug card. UHS stocks approximately fifty of the most commonly needed prescription medications for students.
