Once again, the hard work of our University volunteers and the generosity of our many faculty, staff, and retirees have made a difference in our community. My sincere thanks to all of you for raising more than $1.3 million for the 2010 United Way Red Cross Campaign.
As the largest employer in Greater Rochester, the University has an increasingly important leadership role in helping to maintain and strengthen the Greater Rochester area. While individual fundraising is important and assists many organizations in supporting the people they serve, no single agency can have the kind of impact that United Way does on priorities that reach across the entire community. United Way raises funds to support programs that address community priorities, including reducing violence, improving graduation rates, helping people in crisis, providing support services for the aging, and integrating adults with disabilities into our community.
If you have not yet had a chance to make a pledge, I encourage you to consider doing so. You can either give to the community fund to help address priorities identified by the community or designate your gift for a particular cause. Either way, dollars raised stay right in the Rochester community. By doing so you will be contributing to something much greater than any of us can achieve alone.
President, University of Rochester
