Scott Catlin

Scott Catlin is the Associate Vice President for Technology Ventures at the University of Rochester. Prior to joining the University, he provided legal and executive management guidance at Abbott Medical Optics — a subsidiary of Abbott Laboratories — for sales, regulatory, research & development, clinical, intellectual property, litigation, and compliance matters. As an executive leader, Scott drove strategic decisions and supported R&D and marketing project teams. He has worked in and with start-up companies in Northern and Southern California, and is a former management consultant with Bain & Company. He also served in the U.S. Air Force and Air National Guard as an officer and Judge Advocate (JAG).

Omar Bakht, Ph.D., MBA

Omar Bakht is a recent transplant from Boston where he worked to develop technology from Boston University, the Broad Institute of Harvard and MIT, and life sciences companies starting in New England. Omar hopes to translate University of Rochester’s research efforts into the marketplace as well as invigorate the entrepreneurial community in the Greater Rochester area.  He was attracted to and is encouraged by the innovative methods of technology commercialization being developed by UR Ventures.  Omar is always happy to discuss business ideas (big and small) over tea.

Reid Cunningham

Reid comes to the University as a registered patent attorney with 4 years in private patent practice and 16 years with Xerox Corp. based primarily here in Rochester.  At Xerox he engaged in the legal practice of intellectual property on an international basis supporting licensing worldwide and living for 4 years in the UK where he counseled a large research organization. He looks to use his experience working with research and development in a corporate environment with UR’s inventors on commercializing technologies that arise from their work.  In addition, Reid is a certified Lean Six Sigma blackbelt and will use his training to streamline and improve the patenting process here at UR.  Finally, as a former physics teacher and having previously conduct extension training for technical communities, he is excited about opportunities to provide education on IP and related matters to the students and members of UR staff.

David Englert

David Englert is the Marketing Manager for UR Ventures. He coordinates marketing and branding efforts, but over the course of thirteen years, he has done nearly everything there is to do in a technology transfer office, including disclosure intake, database management, compliance, faculty in-reach, community education, and report writing.
Prior to his arrival at the University, David worked as a Compliance and Validation Auditor for a Big Three accounting firm.
David earned his B.A. in English Literature from the University of Rochester, and spends his free time contemplating the elusive Great American Novel.

J.E. (Johnny) Fahner-Vihtelic

John Fahner-Vihtelic has been a technology manager and intellectual property professional for 23 years. He began his career in this field at the NIH where he managed the device and instrument portfolio for nine years. He was Senior Licensing Manager for Physical Sciences at the University of Utah, then joined the URMC Office of Technology Transfer as Deputy Director. Presently, he spends most of his time working with start-up companies in a variety of capacities — from business assessment, to IP protection, to fund raising, and all aspects of corporate management. He is trained as a nurse and an EMT.

Weimin Kaufman, Ph.D.

Weimin Kaufman joined UR Ventures in October, 2011. She manages a diverse portfolio of biomedical science technologies relating to therapeutics, diagnostics, and drug target discoveries in the areas of neurology, oncology, orthopedics, immunology, and metabolic diseases. Her primary responsibilities include inventor relationship management, invention disclosure evaluation, patenting strategies, market research, B2B marketing, and licensing negotiations.
Prior to joining UR Ventures, Weimin Kaufman spent eighteen months as a Technology Commercialization Liaison at the Cornell Center for Technology Enterprise and Commercialization, in both the Ithaca and Manhattan offices. Before that, she interned at UR Ventures while performing postdoctoral research at the Center for Pediatric Biomedical Research at URMC. Previously, she worked at the University of Illinois at Chicago as a Postdoctoral Fellow in the College of Medicine.
Weimin Kaufman earned her Ph.D. in Biology from Freie Universität Berlin and the Max-Delbrück-Center for Molecular Medicine in Berlin, Germany.

Laura McKnight, RTTP

Laura McKnight is the Senior Intellectual Property Manager for UR Ventures. She provides paralegal assistance to staff IP attorneys, oversees the administration of the University’s intellectual property policies and practices, and manages outside counsel, patent prosecution and annuity matters, as well as government and sponsor reporting and compliance. She is a graduate of St. John Fisher College and has post-graduate certificates in paralegal and intellectual property studies.

Miterko

Erin Miterko

Erin Miterko is an Intellectual Property Manager in the UR Ventures Office at the University of Rochester.  Some of her responsibilities include invoice processing and reviewing and processing legal correspondence as it pertains to the University’s Intellectual Property portfolio. In addition, Erin acts as a supporting member of the Intellectual Property team, which includes the in-house IP  attorneys and Senior Intellectual Property Manager, focusing on such areas as process improvement and docket management.

 Erin earned her B.S. in Speech Pathology with an initial certification in Education from SUNY Geneseo and went on to graduate from the Monroe County Community College Paralegal Program as well as the IPLegalEd Patent Paralegal Program. She is also a licensed New York State Notary Public.

Lisa Peck

Lisa Peck is the Department Administrator for UR Ventures. As such, she is responsible for effective and efficient office operations, as well as the safety of intellectual property assets, and the reliability of financial information. Lisa processes incoming receipts from royalty payments, performs personnel administrative functions, and assures compliance with all applicable office, University, Federal, and international policies and procedures. Lisa oversees the management of the URV accounts, including encumbrance recording, as well as auditing of accounts to ensure the accuracy of information. She reviews, approves, and oversees payments to vendors (including, but not limited to law firms, patent agents, etc.).

Lisa has been with the University since 1993. She holds an Associate’s Degree in Liberal Arts and is a Notary Public.

Matan Rapoport, Ph.D., MBA

Matan Rapoport is managing a portfolio of biomedical technologies. He evaluates invention disclosures, conducts market research activities to evaluate competitive landscape & commercialization potential, manages patent prosecution, performs business development activities, and negotiates licensing opportunities.

Matan holds a PhD from the Hebrew University and an MBA from the University of Rochester.

Mary Shierloh

Mary Shierloh is the Contracts Administrator in UR Ventures. As such, Mary provides professional level administrative support to the office specifically relating to the generation, maintenance, support, and compliance of contracts and licenses. She is responsible for the design, execution, and effectiveness of systems of internal controls to ensure the University of Rochester’s intellectual property assets are safeguarded. She monitors license compliance, provides financial oversight, analyzes data, and provides financial reporting to senior leadership. Mary assures the office complies with University and sponsor policies and procedures as well as applicable federal and international laws and regulations. She has over 13 years’ experience in technology transfer and commercialization.

Mary joined the University of Rochester 2000. She is a Notary Public.

Cynthia

Cynthia Zhang, Ph.D., JD

Cynthia H. Zhang is a patent attorney responsible for IP-related matters in the life sciences area at University of Rochester.  She came to University of Rochester with extensive industrial experiences.  Previously she worked as an in-house patent attorney at Agilent Technologies, Inc., Gilead Sciences and Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corp. advising the corporate clients on a variety of IP matters including global patent portfolio development and management, IP due diligence, licensing, IP and business strategic counseling, Hatch-Waxman related IP matter, ANDA litigation and FDA issues.  Prior to working as in-house patent attorney, Cynthia was a patent attorney at law firms working on IP issues for biotechnology, pharmaceutical and generic businesses.  As a patent attorney here at University of Rochester, Cynthia is committed to help promote the commercial development of the university inventions and technologies.

Cynthia earned her B.S. & M.S. in Chemical Engineering & Chemistry from Tsinghua University, Beijing, P.R. China, and her Ph.D. in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology from Indiana University at Bloomington, Indiana.  After obtaining her Ph.D., Cynthia was a postdoctoral associate with Dr. Geoffrey M. Cooper at Dana Farber Cancer Institute/Boston University conducting researches in cancer biology.  Cynthia received her J.D. from University of Houston Law Center.  During law school, Cynthia served as a judicial intern to Judge David Hittner at the United States District Court for the Southern District of Texas.  Cynthia was selected for inclusion in Who’s Who in America in 2006.
