Faculty, staff, and students were invited on December 2 to
preview two film projects by Joanne Larson, associate professor
and chair, teaching and curriculum. Both films are directed
by David Smith.
The first project, made possible through a grant from Michael
and Kathy Scandling, is a professional development film on
literacy learning and the teaching methods of Warner doctoral
student Mary Rita Maier. Maier teaches first grade in the
Greece Central School District. The film details the techniques
used by Maier to teach her students how to read and write.
The second film is a documentary chronicling the effects
of the federal No Child Left Behind Act on area educators
and their students. In particular, Warner doctoral student
and New York State Teacher of the Year, Lynn Gatto, is featured
leading her fourth-grade Rochester City School District students
through an academic year. Additional segments will include
other area educators. This documentary was one of three national
finalists for a CNN/HBO grant.
