James-Wilson Presents Papers in Spain, UK
At the invitation of members of the Institute of Childhood and the Urban World in Barcelona, Sonia James-Wilson, assistant professor, presented the paper: "Towards a Knowledge Base for Urban Teacher Development: A Social Justice Approach to Faculty and Doctoral Candidates" at the Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona in Spain. She was also an invited guest at Forum Barcelona 2004, an international gathering focused on the themes of cultural diversity, sustainable development, and conditions for peace.
In addition, James-Wilson presented two papers at the annual meeting of the British Educational Research Association which, was held in Manchester, UK in September. The presentations were based on research she conducted in Toronto and were focused on the ways in which school administrators can support "resistant" secondary teachers through school reform and critical approaches to advocacy for families in inner-city schools.
Ares Begins Project with East High School
Nancy Ares, assistant professor, has been identified by Texas Instruments as one of three researchers to test a new technology, networked graphing calculators, in the classroom. Ares, along with doctoral students Al Schademan, Dawn Evans, and Peggy Postell is just beginning work on a five-year project with mathematics, science, and special education teachers at East High School in Rochester.
Hursh Presents Papers, Named to Editorial Board
David Hursh, associate professor, presented two papers at the British Educational Research Association annual conference in Manchester, and one paper at the European Educational Research Association conference in Crete, Greece. The papers focused on aspects of English and U.S. educational policy, particularly how they reflect neo-liberal social policies and exacerbate inequality.
Hursh was also named to the editorial board of the Journal for Critical Education Policy Studies.
Luehmann selected as NSF Junior Fellow
April Luehmann, assistant professor, has been named a National Science Foundation (NSF) early career junior fellow. The award, based on an essay and curriculum vitae, included support to attend the International Conference of the Learning Sciences in Santa Monica, Calif. in June.
Lewis Presents at Conference
Aimee Lewis, communications and Web manager, presented "From the Ground Up: Project Management" at the fifth annual HighEdWebDev national conference for Web professionals in October in Rochester.
Guiffrida Publishes Two Papers
Doug Guiffrida, assistant professor, wrote the paper "Friends From Home: Asset and Liability to African American Students Attending a Predominantly White Institution," which appeared in the Summer 2004 issue of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators Journal.
In addition, Guiffrida has been appointed the associate editor of the Journal of College Counseling, which is the journal of the American College Counseling Association.
Warner Students, Faculty Present at Counselor Conference
The Warner School was well represented at the 2004 Annual Conference of the North Atlantic Regional Association for Counselor Education and Supervision. The conference, "Diverse Journeys: Expanding Our Boundaries and Broadening Our Perspectives" was held in Mystic Hilton, Conn. in October.
Doctoral student Akhtar Ghassemi presented "Cognitive Behavior Therapy and Theoretical Integration." Kathryn Douthit, assistant professor, and Karen Mackie, instructor, presented "The Postmodern Brain: Integrating Narrative and Neuroscientific Theory." Doug Guiffrida, assistant professor, and doctoral student, Rachel Jordan co-presented "Metaphor as a Teaching Tool in Clinical Supervision." Guiffrida also co-presented "4,3,2,1...Counselor Educators' Experiences on the Road to Tenure."
