Brent Earns Tenure, Promoted to Associate Professor

The University of Rochester Board of Trustees has voted to grant Brian Brent, educational leadership, tenure, and to promote him to the position of associate professor. The change was effective March 1.

Brent joined the Warner faculty six years ago and teaches fiscal and economic policy issues relating to education. His research interests include nontraditional revenues at the local level and cost-effective use of education dollars.

"I chose the Warner School to have the opportunity to work with Tyll van Geel (Earl B. Taylor professor and chair, educational leadership) and Randy Curren (associate professor, educational leadership), two well-respected scholars in the field of educational leadership and policy," Brent explains. "It is now clear to me that it was the correct choice. I have benefited greatly from my interactions with these two scholars, as well as other Warner faculty."

Van Geel, was pleased with the announcement. "Speaking both for the educational leadership program of the Warner School and myself personally, we could not be more delighted that Professor Brent achieved tenure. As a colleague we could not ask for more.

"Brian's energy and enthusiasm have been a marvelous leavening agent for the program. He brings both a high level of expertise and engaging teaching style into the classroom, and his extensive work on educational policy with New York State and in professional organizations has brought the School and our program important local and national visibility," added van Geel.

Brent has contributed to many publications, including: The Journal of Education Finance; Educational Policy; Economics of Education Review; Journal of School Business Management; Phi Delta Kappan; and School Business Affairs. He is also the author of the book Raising Money for Education (Corwin Press, 1997). In addition, Brent has served on the boards of the American Education Finance Association and the New York State Education Finance Research Consortium.

In 2000, the University honored Brent with the G. Graydon and Jane W. Curtis Award for excellence in teaching by a non-tenured member of the faculty.

Reflecting on what it means to be granted tenure, Brent said, "I now have a mandate to continue my work in school finance, with the hope that my efforts will improve educational opportunities for children."
