Advanced Certificate in School Building Leadership (ISIS code: AB4)

This program is designed for persons who wish to attain certification in school building leadership without a degree. Successful completion of this program qualifies you for a variety of administrative positions in K-12 public schools including: principal, housemaster, supervisor, department chair, assistant principal, coordinator, unit head, and other positions serving more than 10 periods per week as an administrative or supervisory position, except school district leaders or school district business leader.

Pre-requisites: M.S. Degree; (by graduation) permanent or professional certification in classroom teaching or pupil personnel service; some teaching, pupil service and/or administrative experience.


I. Core Courses
(18 credits)

ED 462 Managing School Resources
ED 465 School Governance and the Rights of Students and Teachers
ED 469 Leadership and Organizational Dynamics
EDU 407 Curricular and Instructional Leadership
EDU 421 Human Resource Management
EDU 468 Data-Driven School Improvement

Substitution of one of these courses with another Educational Leadership course may be possible with permission of advisor.

II. Administrative Internship (EDF 498)
(6 credits)

The internship must be a total of 15 weeks full time or equivalent, although it may take place over more than one semester. Learn more about the administrative internship.

Note: Persons interested in also obtaining NYS certification in school district leadership will only need to take one additional course (EDU 502: Leading the School District: The Superintendency in the 21st Century)
