Eastman Winter Ball
The Winter Ball for Eastman students will be held Feb. 2 at the Rochester Club Ballroom. Doors open at 7 p.m., and a four-course dinner begins at 7:30 p.m. Dancing continues until midnight. The theme this year is masquerade. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased in the student life office.
Andrew Niles Awarded Churchill Scholarship
Andrew Niles, a senior honors mathematics major, has been named a 2008 Churchill Scholar, an honor reserved for just 12 students nationally each year. Read more...
'The Happy and Healthy Vulva'
As part of Winterfest, Amy Jo Goddard presents the "The Happy and Healthy Vulva" workshop Friday, Feb. 1, at 5 p.m. in Wilson Commons. Goddard, a professional sexuality educator, focuses on sexuality as an important, healthy, and natural part of people's lives.
Global Warming Awareness Day
Grassroots will host a table in Wilson Commons Jan. 30 from noon to 7 p.m. about the topic of climate change. Stop by to find out about University groups that are making a difference and to learn about the politics of climate change.
KEY Program Information Sessions
Learn about the Kauffman Entrepreneurial Year, a tuition-free fifth year for using entrepreneurial creativity, at one of the information sessions in Lattimore 311 at 4 p.m. on Jan. 30 and Feb. 7, 11, 19, and 26. Applications are due March 20.
Fulbright Sessions
Be a U.S. student ambassador while pursuing advanced studies, a research project, or English teaching abroad. Find out more at a Fulbright Information session. All students welcome, especially juniors. Tuesday, Jan. 29, at noon and Friday, Feb. 1, at 11 a.m., both in the Stackel Room (202) in Wilson Commons. For details see the Fellowships Web site.
Take Five Scholars Program
The Take Five Scholars Program is holding information sessions in Wilson Commons 122 at 4 p.m. on Jan 30 and Feb. 5, 14, 18, and 22. Students may apply as soon as they have completed one semester at the University, have at least one full semester remaining, and have declared their major. Students may also watch the informational DVD available in the Multi-Media Center in Rush Rhees Library.
New Eastman Assistant Dean for Student Life
Jason Smith is the new assistant dean for student life at Eastman. A Rochester political science graduate, Smith has worked in the College's dean of students office for the past several years. He is also completing a master’s program in higher education and student affairs through the Warner School. Read more about Eastman's student life office at their Web site.
Valentine's Day Concert
The New Eastman Outreach Orchestra will join the City school district’s School of the Arts Orchestra for a special Valentine’s Day concert of “Love Music” at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 14, at the School of the Arts, 45 Prince Street. The two groups will perform music by Argentina’s signature composers Asto Piazzola and Alberto Ginasetra
Name the New Yellowjacket
A committee of students, faculty, staff, and alumni have reviewed more than 1,200 suggestions submitted for naming the new mascot. Now it's time to choose your favorite from the six finalists. Vote online by Monday, Jan. 28.

Time to Get Your Green On
Recyclemania, the annual, intercollegiate competition aimed at raising awareness about waste reduction, kicks off Jan. 27. The contest runs for 10 weeks and pits the University against nearly 400 schools, including area participants RIT and Roberts Wesleyan College. Students track recyclables collected in dorms and dining facilities, and use the data to compete in categories including recyclables per capita and highest recycling rate.
T-shirt Design Contest
Submissions for the University t-shirt design contest are due Feb. 1 by 5 p.m. The winning artist will receive a $50 Barnes & Noble gift card and a free t-shirt. The winning design will be sold in the bookstore and 10 percent of sales will be donated to Foodlink. E-mail mferrante@ur.rochester.edu for contest rules.
Free Newspapers
Beginning Monday, Jan. 28, the Democrat and Chronicle, USA Today, and the New York Times will be available free on weekdays to undergraduates at the Susan B. Anthony Hall, Douglass Dining Center, Gleason Library, and on the third floor of Wilson Commons. The Collegiate Readership program is sponsored by the Students' Association, the Parents Fund and the River Campus Libraries.

Women Engineers Seek Volunteers
Volunteers are needed for a Girl Scout workshop on Saturday, Feb. 2. The workshop, Making it Matter, introduces engineering through interesting activities.
