As at other institutions, the events of September 11 (and following) have prompted the University to review its general security procedures. These include procedures for ensuring only authorized access to locked areas, including research laboratories; a review of campus emergency response and disaster recovery plans; and measures that, from the perspective of environmental and health safety, promote safe campus operations.

Fortunately, no dangerous packages or letters have been received at University mailrooms or offices. Nevertheless, for safety's sake we continue to monitor and, where appropriate, implement guidelines issued by the Centers for Disease Control. We recently implemented CDC recommendations that University mailroom staff, since they handle large quantities of mail, wear protective gloves. If any other staff around the University would like to use gloves as well, they can call the Office of University Risk Management and Environmental Safety at x5-3241 for instructions on the recommended types and their use.

I invite you check the University's home page and its link on "Emergency Preparedness" for continuing updates on safety procedures. University Risk Management and Environmental Safety's Web site also contains important reference information.
