{"id":253906,"date":"2007-08-06T18:04:53","date_gmt":"2007-08-06T18:04:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.wdev.rochester.edu\/College\/translation\/threepercent-dev\/2007\/08\/06\/this-weeks-pw-reviews\/"},"modified":"2018-04-16T17:38:54","modified_gmt":"2018-04-16T17:38:54","slug":"this-weeks-pw-reviews","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/College\/translation\/threepercent\/2007\/08\/06\/this-weeks-pw-reviews\/","title":{"rendered":"This Week&#39;s PW Reviews"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The August 6th set of <i>Publisher Weekly<\/i> fiction reviews are now <a href=\"http:\/\/www.publishersweekly.com\/article\/CA6465061.html?nid=3336\">online<\/a> and feature a couple of interesting books in translation. <\/p>\n<p>The first is <i>Cries in the Drizzle<\/i> (which sounds like a translated title) by Yu Hua &#8220;depicts a family&#8217;s life in the Zhejiang province of Maoist China during the 1970s.&#8221; According to <i>PW<\/i>, &#8220;The narrative flits between time and space to create the landscape of Sun Guanglin&#8217;s youth [. . .] Though the fractured structure has its disjointed moments, Barr&#8217;s translation perfectly captures the ebb and flow of a community on the brink of change.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Personally, I&#8217;m more interested in the review of Christian Oster&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.otherpress.com\/bookpage.php?bkID=518\"><i>The Unforeseen<\/i><\/a>,  the review of which ends with this intriguing statement:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The result is a love story deeply informed by Beckett (complete with the narrator acquiring a limp like that of <i>Molloy<\/i>&#8216;s title character), where swells of feeling are tracked in sneezes as involuntary as love itself. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>I thought <i>A Cleaning Woman<\/i> was an excellent book&#8212;and movie (and not just because I have a crush on the leading actress)&#8212;and can&#8217;t wait to read this new title. Good to see that someone is still publishing quirky, funny French writers. There are a slew referenced in Warren Motte&#8217;s excellent <i>Fables of the Novel<\/i>, although only a handful of the books he writes about have made it into English. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The August 6th set of Publisher Weekly fiction reviews are now online and feature a couple of interesting books in translation.
