{"id":255966,"date":"2007-09-13T21:00:47","date_gmt":"2007-09-13T21:00:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.wdev.rochester.edu\/College\/translation\/threepercent-dev\/2007\/09\/13\/tallinn-in-2011\/"},"modified":"2018-04-16T17:36:26","modified_gmt":"2018-04-16T17:36:26","slug":"tallinn-in-2011","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/College\/translation\/threepercent\/2007\/09\/13\/tallinn-in-2011\/","title":{"rendered":"Tallinn in 2011"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cafebabel.com\/en\/article.asp?T=T&#38;Id=12128\">Cafe Babel<\/a> has an article about Tallinn&#8217;s plans as European Cultural Capital in 2011. <\/p>\n<p>The project is entitled &#8220;Tallinn: Everlasting Fairytale,&#8221; and the impressive program is available online as a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tallinn2011.ee\/pdf\/tallinn2011_eng.pdf\">pdf<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This is a bit concerning though:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The EU is a bit stingy &#8211; they are donating a mere 1.5 million euros, but the planned budget costs over 17 million euros. But prestige indicates that the title of a &#8216;cultural capital&#8217; alone means development and progress. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Tallinn is an amazing city, and it sounds like a lot of interesting things are happening:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Many projects follow the trend of injecting modernity in what&#8217;s already existing. The entire coastal region, pure factory ground, which wasn&#8217;t accessible during the Soviet time, is being developed into a &#8216;culture mile&#8217;; a dark Zuk\u00fcnftige Kulturfabrik power and heat supply station. In 1979 it was the scene of Andrei Tarkovsky&#8217;s <i>Stalker,<\/i> and will be transformed into a modern culture factory. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Cafe Babel has an article about Tallinn&#8217;s plans as European Cultural Capital in 2011.
