{"id":256686,"date":"2007-10-05T19:34:07","date_gmt":"2007-10-05T19:34:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.wdev.rochester.edu\/College\/translation\/threepercent-dev\/2007\/10\/05\/international-writing-program-40th-anniversary\/"},"modified":"2018-04-16T17:36:19","modified_gmt":"2018-04-16T17:36:19","slug":"international-writing-program-40th-anniversary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/College\/translation\/threepercent\/2007\/10\/05\/international-writing-program-40th-anniversary\/","title":{"rendered":"International Writing Program 40th Anniversary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Starting Sunday, the University of Iowa will be celebrating the 40th anniversary of the International Writing Program with a host of interesting events. <\/p>\n<p>Everything kicks off Sunday at 5:00 at Prairie Lights where Daniel Weissbort, Matvei Yankelevich, and Michael Judd will be reading.<\/p>\n<p>The complete list of events is available <a href=\"http:\/\/at-lamp.its.uiowa.edu\/virtualwu\/index.php\/40th\">here<\/a>, and here are a few highlights:<\/p>\n<p><b>Global Play Collaborative<\/b<br \/>\nSunday, October 7 \u2013 Monday, October 8<br \/>\n12:00 pm \u2013 12:00 pm (not open to the public)<\/p>\n<p>Playwrights from around the world work together to create a play within a 24-hour period.<\/p>\n<p><b>Panel: World Lit Net: Writing in the Age of Global Communication<\/b><br \/>\nMonday, October 8<br \/>\n12:00 \u2013 1:30 pm<br \/>\nE105 Adler Journalism Building<\/p>\n<p>Editors and writers (Matvei Yankelevich, Michael Orthofer, Chad Post, Cris Mattison, Dedi Felman, and Eliot Weinberger; Russell Valentino and Nata\u0161a Durovi\u010dov\u00e1, moderators) discuss the value of the Internet as a tool of dissemination, a locus of literary community, and a potential engine for (or roadblock to) \u201cworld literature.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>Reading: Ersi Sotiropoulos, Hamdy el-Gazzar<\/b><br \/>\nMonday, October 8<br \/>\n7:00 \u2013 8:00 pm<br \/>\nPrairie Lights<\/p>\n<p>Greek novelist Ersi Sotiropoulos (<span class=\"caps\">IWP<\/span> \u201981) reads from her fifth novel, <i>Zig-Zag Through the Bitter Orange Trees.<\/i> Egyptian novelist and <span class=\"caps\">IWP<\/span> 2007 resident Hamdy el-Gazzar reads from his first novel, <i>Black Magic.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>Discussion: The World\u2019s Voice In Our Ear: Influences of World Literature on Writing and Writers<\/b><br \/>\nTuesday, October 9<br \/>\n12:00 \u2013 1:30 pm<br \/>\n140 Schaeffer<\/p>\n<p>Eliot Weinberger, Iowa Review editor David Hamilton, and <span class=\"caps\">IWP<\/span> 2007 resident Istv\u00e1n L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Geher (Hungary) discuss the influence of world literature on their work and on their native literature.<\/p>\n<p><b>Discussion: Publishing Books in Translation<\/b><br \/>\nTuesday, October 9<br \/>\n2:00 \u2013 3:00 pm<br \/>\nShambaugh House<\/p>\n<p>Discussion on publishing with Sal Robinson, an editor in the international books division of Harcourt, and Russell Valentino, UI professor and co-founder of Autumn Hill Press, which specializes in translations of foreign-language fiction.<\/p>\n<p><b>Reception and Retrospective: 40 Years of the IWP<\/b><br \/>\nTuesday, October 9<br \/>\n5:30 \u2013 7:30 pm*<br \/>\nAtrium, UI Art Museum<\/p>\n<p>Guests, including <span class=\"caps\">IWP<\/span> founder Hualing Engle, <span class=\"caps\">IWP<\/span> director Chris Merrill, Daniel Weissbort, Stavros Deligiorgis, and Peter Nazareth share their memories of the <span class=\"caps\">IWP<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><b>Panel: Creating and Promoting African Literature<\/b><br \/>\nThursday, October 11<br \/>\n12:00 \u2013 1:30 pm<br \/>\nMeeting Room A, Iowa City Public Library<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"caps\">IWP<\/span> 2007 residents Tom Dreyer (South Africa) and Peter Kimani (Kenya), along with former UI associate dean Sandra Barkan and Rwandan poet and <span class=\"caps\">UNI<\/span> professor of English Pierre-Damien Mvuyekure, discuss the business of writing and literature on the African continent. Moderated by Peter Nazareth, UI professor of English. Co-sponsored by the African Studies Program.<\/p>\n<p><b>Panel: State of the Art: Literature From Where I Stand<\/b><br \/>\nTuesday, October 11<br \/>\n12:00 \u2013 1:30 pm<br \/>\nMeeting Room A, Iowa City Public Library<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"caps\">IWP<\/span> 2007 residents James T.C. Na (China\/Philippines), Simone Inguanez (Malta), Nirwan Dewanto (Indonesia), Khaled Khalifa (Syria), and Kei Miller (Jamaica) discuss \u201cworld perspectives and home literatures.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>Panel: Cultural Diplomacy: The Writer and the World<\/b><br \/>\n4:00 \u2013 5:00 pm<br \/>\nSenate Chambers, Old Capitol<\/p>\n<p>Discussion of the roles writers and their advocates play in increasing understanding between cultures. Panelists scheduled to appear include Richard Arndt, author of &#8220;First Resort of Kings: US Cultural Diplomacy in the Twentieth Century,&#8221; former Congressman James Leach, UI professor of English Harry Stecopoulos, and <span class=\"caps\">IWP<\/span> 2007 resident Kavery Nambisan (India).<\/p>\n<p>And this is just a sample. Too bad this is overlapping with the Frankfurt Book Fair this year.
