{"id":258046,"date":"2007-11-27T14:03:24","date_gmt":"2007-11-27T14:03:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.wdev.rochester.edu\/College\/translation\/threepercent-dev\/2007\/11\/27\/nea-reading-at-risk-follow-up\/"},"modified":"2018-04-16T17:34:53","modified_gmt":"2018-04-16T17:34:53","slug":"nea-reading-at-risk-follow-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/College\/translation\/threepercent\/2007\/11\/27\/nea-reading-at-risk-follow-up\/","title":{"rendered":"NEA Reading at Risk Follow-up"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last week, the <span class=\"caps\">NEA<\/span> announced the release of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nea.gov\/research\/ToRead.pdf\">To Read or Not To Read: A Question of National Consequence,<\/a> a &#8220;new and comprehensive analysis of reading patterns in the United States.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Of course, we all already know the bad news&#8212;people are reading less.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Less than one-third of 13-year-olds are daily readers, a 14 percent decline from 20 years earlier. Among 17-year-olds, the percentage of non-readers doubled over a 20-year period, from nine percent in 1984 to 19 percent in 2004.1<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p>On average, Americans ages 15 to 24 spend almost two hours a day watching TV, and only seven minutes of their daily leisure time on reading.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Seven minutes?!? Wonder how much time kids spend reading online . . . <\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s been mentioned elsewhere, but this is a classic, depressing finding: &#8220;Nearly half of all Americans ages 18 to 24 read no books for pleasure.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Actually, I&#8217;m surprised it&#8217;s not higher. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last week, the NEA announced the release of To Read or Not To Read: A Question of National Consequence, a &#8220;new and comprehensive analysis of reading patterns in the United States.&#8221; Of course, we all already know the bad news&#8212;people are reading less.
