Byatt <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ft.com\/cms\/s\/0\/b3eae99c-9701-11dc-b2da-0000779fd2ac.html\">reviews<\/a> Adam Thirwell&#8217;s <em>Miss Herbert<\/em> in the <em>Financial Times<\/em>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>Miss Herbert<\/em> is a thoughtful, and frequently hilarious, study of the nature of literary translation. It is also a work of art, a new form. Juliet Herbert was the English governess of Flaubert\u2019s niece, Caroline. She wrote a translation of Madame Bovary, which Flaubert approved, and which has disappeared, unread. This ghost is a central character in a tale of conversations between writers, languages and forms.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Flaubert\u2019s carefully wrought style, his \u201cmania for sentences\u201d, makes him in one sense untranslatable. The same could be argued of James Joyce\u2019s layered wordplay, local detail and complicated rhythms. Novelist Adam Thirlwell, the author of <em>Politics<\/em>, discusses the tension between literal translation of words and attempts to translate a \u201cstyle\u201d. He argues that \u2013 always with some slippage or accidents \u2013 styles can be translated and transmitted. He has a cosmopolitan taste in novels, and describes his own canon, ranging from Cervantes to Machado de Assis, from Italo Svevo who was taught English by Joyce, to Witold Gombrowicz and Bohumil Hrabal.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>It sounds like a really interesting book. <em>Politics<\/em> was published by HarperCollins\/Fourth Estate in the US, but I doubt that they&#8217;ll be picking up this one.
