{"id":260716,"date":"2008-03-03T15:49:10","date_gmt":"2008-03-03T15:49:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.wdev.rochester.edu\/College\/translation\/threepercent-dev\/2008\/03\/03\/umberto-eco-and-salman-rushdie-in-rochester-for-pen-world-voices\/"},"modified":"2018-04-16T17:32:24","modified_gmt":"2018-04-16T17:32:24","slug":"umberto-eco-and-salman-rushdie-in-rochester-for-pen-world-voices","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/College\/translation\/threepercent\/2008\/03\/03\/umberto-eco-and-salman-rushdie-in-rochester-for-pen-world-voices\/","title":{"rendered":"Umberto Eco and Salman Rushdie in Rochester for PEN World Voices"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We&#8217;ve been planning this for the past few months (basically ever since the <span class=\"caps\">NYSCA<\/span> sponsorted Facing Pages retreat last October), but we&#8217;re really pleased to finally be able to publicly announce that on May 1st, Open Letter will be hosting a <span class=\"caps\">PEN<\/span> World Voices event here in Rochester featuring Umberto Eco and Salman Rushdie.<\/p>\n<p>This event&#8212;the first official <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pen.org\/page.php\/prmID\/1096\"><span class=\"caps\">PEN<\/span> World Voices Festival<\/a> event to take place outside of New York City&#8212;will take place from 6-8pm at the University of Rochester Advancement and Alumni Center, 300 E. River Road.<\/p>\n<p>The event is free and open to the public, but we do have a limited number of seats, so all attendees must register via the link below. Simply click through, fill out the necessary info and print your confirmation page, which you&#8217;ll need to bring the night of the event.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/events.openletterbooks.com\/events\/new\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/College\/translation\/threepercent\/images\/65.gif\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t think I really need to explain who Salman Rushdie and Umberto Eco are, but if you&#8217;re interested, more info about each are available on this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/College\/translation\/threepercent\/index.php?s=file_download&#38;id=7\">press release.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In terms of Rushdie, what I&#8217;m most excited about is this new edition of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.randomhouse.com\/catalog\/display.pperl?isbn=9780812976700\"><i>Shame,<\/i><\/a> which is a Rushdie novel I haven&#8217;t read, but one that was recommended to me by both Edwin Frank of <span class=\"caps\">NYRB<\/span> and Joanna Scott. Also, his new book&#8212; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.randomhouse.com\/catalog\/display.pperl?isbn=9780375504334\"><i>The Enchantress of Florence<\/i><\/a> &#8212;will be out in June, was recently excerpted in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/fiction\/features\/2008\/02\/25\/080225fi_fiction_rushdie\"><i>New Yorker<\/i><\/a> and discussed at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nplusonemag.com\/?q=node\/447\"><i>N+1<\/i><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Umberto Eco&#8212;who may well give his reading in Italian, which I think would be really cool&#8212;has a very impressive <a href=\"http:\/\/www.umbertoeco.com\/\">website<\/a> with information about all his books, interviews, articles about his work, etc. I&#8217;m very interested in reading his latest book <a href=\"http:\/\/www.harcourtbooks.com\/bookcatalogs\/bookpages\/9780151013517.asp\"><i>Turning Back the Clock: Hot Wars and Media Populism,<\/i><\/a> which <i>Publishers Weekly<\/i> describes as such: &#8220;He delves deeply into such subjects as Mideastern and European politics, myth, prejudice, globalization, <i>The Da Vinci Code,<\/i> magical thinking, rhetoric, religion, intelligent design and Harry Potter.&#8221; An <a href=\"http:\/\/www.harcourtbooks.com\/bookcatalogs\/bookpage.asp?isbn=0151013519&#38;option=excerpt\">excerpt<\/a> is available online from Harcourt. <\/p>\n<p>Personally, I&#8217;m really excited to be involved in such a great event, with such great authors, and I have to thank Caro Llewellyn from <span class=\"caps\">PEN<\/span> for making this all possible.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We&#8217;ve been planning this for the past few months (basically ever since the NYSCA sponsorted Facing Pages retreat last October), but we&#8217;re really pleased to finally be able to publicly announce that on May 1st, Open Letter will be hosting a PEN World Voices event here in Rochester featuring Umberto Eco and Salman Rushdie.
