{"id":260926,"date":"2008-03-13T13:02:34","date_gmt":"2008-03-13T13:02:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.wdev.rochester.edu\/College\/translation\/threepercent-dev\/2008\/03\/13\/national-grad-student-translation-conference\/"},"modified":"2018-04-16T17:32:22","modified_gmt":"2018-04-16T17:32:22","slug":"national-grad-student-translation-conference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/College\/translation\/threepercent\/2008\/03\/13\/national-grad-student-translation-conference\/","title":{"rendered":"National Grad Student Translation Conference"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Since I <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/College\/translation\/threepercent\/index.php?id=875\">referenced this earlier,<\/a> and since it&#8217;s just a few weeks away, I feel like I should post some information about the National Grad Student Translation Conference that the Center for Literary Translation at Columbia University will be hosting From March 28th through the 30th.<\/p>\n<p>As stated in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/College\/translation\/threepercent\/index.php?s=file_download&#38;id=9\">this press release<\/a> this is the third biennial translation conference (the first two took place at <span class=\"caps\">UCLA<\/span> and the University of Iowa). All events are free and open to the public, and more info can be found at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.centerforliterarytranslation.org\/CLT-GSTC.html\">Center for Literary Translation website.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>I hate to do this, but to fit an image of the conference poster into this column made it basically unreadable, but here&#8217;s a link to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/College\/translation\/threepercent\/index.php?s=file_download&#38;id=10\">pdf version.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The keynote event is a discussion between the Fifteenth Poet Laureate of the United States, Charles Simic and Academic Director of the Center for Literary Translation, Michael Scammell that will take place at Columbia&#8217;s Casa Italiana.<\/p>\n<p>A number of the events sound fantastic, especially the opening reading (which Open Letter is actually sponsoring):<\/p>\n<p>Friday, March 28 at 7:30 pm<br \/>\nPhilosophy Hall 301<\/p>\n<p>Karen Emmerich, translator of Poems (1945-1971) by Miltos<br \/>\nSachtouris; Idra Novey, translator of The Clean Shirt of It<br \/>\nby Paulo Henriques Britto; Lisa Lubasch, translator of Paul<br \/>\n\u00c9luard\u2019s A Moral Lesson; Peter Wortsman, a translator of<br \/>\nHeinrich Heine, Robert Musil, and others.<\/p>\n<p>Saturday&#8217;s events include roundtables on &#8220;Multilingualism and Translation,&#8221; &#8220;Translation and Publishing,&#8221; &#8220;Translation and the Academy,&#8221; and  &#8220;Translation and Canon Formation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Two roundtable discussions will take place on Sunday: &#8220;Translation and Theory&#8221; and &#8220;Translation Ethics, Censorship, Speaking Out.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>With a stellar list of participates&#8212;including Alfred MacAdam, Susan Bernofsky, Eliot Weinberger, Dedi Felman, Jill Schoolman, and many, many more&#8212;this should be a really interesting conference.
