{"id":261596,"date":"2008-04-17T18:46:41","date_gmt":"2008-04-17T18:46:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.wdev.rochester.edu\/College\/translation\/threepercent-dev\/2008\/04\/17\/insert-your-own-joke-complaint-about-government-spending-here\/"},"modified":"2018-04-16T17:32:16","modified_gmt":"2018-04-16T17:32:16","slug":"insert-your-own-joke-complaint-about-government-spending-here","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/College\/translation\/threepercent\/2008\/04\/17\/insert-your-own-joke-complaint-about-government-spending-here\/","title":{"rendered":"Insert Your Own Joke\/Complaint About Government Spending Here"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.publishersweekly.com\/article\/CA6551550.html?rssid=192\"><em>PW<\/em>:<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>President Bush\u2019s proposed 2009 budget eliminates all the funding for Reading Is Fundamental\u2019s book distribution program that has, since 1966, provided more than 325 million books to more than 30 million underprivileged children.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cWith 13 million children living in poverty in this country, the need for <span class=\"caps\">RIF<\/span> has never been greater,\u201d said <span class=\"caps\">RIF<\/span> <span class=\"caps\">CEO<\/span>\/president Carol Rasco, The annually funded <span class=\"caps\">RIF<\/span> program is currently approved through September 2009, but if Bush\u2019s budget is approved, 4.6 million children will not receive 16 million free books the following year. <span class=\"caps\">RIF<\/span>, the oldest and largest children\u2019s and family nonprofit literacy organization in the U.S, has been funded by Congress and six Administrations without interruption since 1975.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Just what the world needs now&#8212;more money for <del>war<\/del> diplomacy. <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>RIF\u2019s Web site (www.RIF.org) provides a link for supporters to find their senator and representative and send an email message to them and President Bush in support of continued funding. The appropriation committee will be meeting in May and June to decide on budgets.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The best part of this story is the bit about Bush&#8217;s ties to <span class=\"caps\">RIF<\/span>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Ironically, while President Bush continually overlooks the organization, both his wife and mother have held positions within the organization. Barbara Bush served on RIF\u2019s Board of Directors from 1980 to 1988 and then on its National Advisory Board from 1989 to 1992 (chairing the Advisory Board for three of the four years.) Laura Bush served on RIF\u2019s National Advisory Council from 1996 to 2001.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The good news?<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>This is the second time the Bush administration has tried to cut RIF\u2019s funding.
