{"id":264926,"date":"2008-09-30T13:44:28","date_gmt":"2008-09-30T13:44:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.wdev.rochester.edu\/College\/translation\/threepercent-dev\/2008\/09\/30\/translation-prizes-2008\/"},"modified":"2018-04-16T17:29:48","modified_gmt":"2018-04-16T17:29:48","slug":"translation-prizes-2008","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/College\/translation\/threepercent\/2008\/09\/30\/translation-prizes-2008\/","title":{"rendered":"Translation Prizes 2008"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Over at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.complete-review.com\/saloon\/archive\/200809c.htm#hd4\">Literary Saloon<\/a> Michael Orthofer has a great summary about the 2008 &#8220;Translation Prizes,&#8221; lamenting the generic name and overall lack of coverage:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>We realise it&#8217;s sort of an umbrella-designation &#8212; the six prizes do come with their own names and\/or sponsors &#8212; but it still seems way too vague to us.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p>A bit more publicity couldn&#8217;t hurt either: yes, sites like the Translators Association of the Society of Authors have some <a href=\"http:\/\/www.societyofauthors.org\/prizes_grants_and_awards\/prizes_for_published_translations\/\">information<\/a> (though none about this years winners, last we checked . . .), but for the most part you&#8217;re hard-pressed to find any. They seemed to have a nice poster for the event too &#8212; but the only place we could find it depicted was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iicbelgrado.esteri.it\/IIC_Londra\/webform\/SchedaEvento.aspx?id=337&#38;citta=Londra\">here,<\/a> in that tiny size. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Thankfully he does provide a list of the winners though:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> The Saif Ghobash-Banipal Prize for translation from Arabic, which went to Fady Joudah for his translation of Mahmoud Darwish&#8217;s poetry collections in <em>The Butterfly&#8217;s Burden.<\/em> <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>The Scott Moncrieff Prize for translation from French went to Frank Wynne for his translations of <em>Holiday in a Coma &#038; Love Lasts Three Years<\/em> by Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Beigbeder.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>The Schlegel-Tieck Prize for translation from German went to Ian Fairley for his translation of <em>Snow Part<\/em> by Paul Celan. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>The Hellenic Foundation for Culture Translation Prize for translation from modern Greek went to Roderick Beaton for his translation of <em>A Levant Journal<\/em> by George Seferis. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>The John Florio Prize for translation from Italian went to Peter Robinson for his translation of <em>The Greener Meadow<\/em> by Luciano Erba. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>The Premio Valle-Incl\u00e1n for translation from Spanish went to Nick Caistor for his translation of <em>The Past<\/em> by Alan Pauls.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Over at the Literary Saloon Michael Orthofer has a great summary about the 2008 &#8220;Translation Prizes,&#8221; lamenting the generic name and overall lack of coverage: We realise it&#8217;s sort of an umbrella-designation &#8212; the six prizes do come with their own names and\/or sponsors &#8212; but it still seems way too vague to us.
