{"id":266486,"date":"2008-12-01T14:42:57","date_gmt":"2008-12-01T14:42:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.wdev.rochester.edu\/College\/translation\/threepercent-dev\/2008\/12\/01\/two-spanish-prizes\/"},"modified":"2018-04-16T17:27:33","modified_gmt":"2018-04-16T17:27:33","slug":"two-spanish-prizes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/College\/translation\/threepercent\/2008\/12\/01\/two-spanish-prizes\/","title":{"rendered":"Two Spanish Prizes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This is kind of old news, but last week Juan Goytisolo was awarded Spain&#8217;s National Prize for Literature, an extremely prestigious award honoring a writer&#8217;s career.<\/p>\n<p>Goytisolo is one of my all-time favorite writers, especially <em>Makbara<\/em>, <em>Marks of Identity<\/em>, <em>Count Julian<\/em>, and <em>Juan the Landless<\/em>. I actually had the opportunity to have lunch with him once during the Guadalajara Book Fair. He was incredibly charming and intelligent (as expected) and told a great story about Fidel Castro and Goytisolo&#8217;s vinegar allergy . . .<\/p>\n<p>Dalkey Archive has reprinted all of the titles mentioned above, with the exception of <em>Juan the Landless<\/em>, which I think will be coming out in the future.<\/p>\n<p>*<\/p>\n<p>Over the holiday weekend, it was announced that Juan Marse was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/hostednews\/ap\/article\/ALeqM5hdCVARaccID18fJ2bHJBEnfAuyEQD94NE2K00\">awarded the Cervantes Prize,<\/a> which is considered to be the Nobel Prize for literature in Spanish.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Marse is best known for his novels about people enduring tough times in Catalonia after the 1936-1939 civil war, which ended with fascist dictator Francisco Franco&#8217;s victory and was followed by years of repression against his foes.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Doesn&#8217;t look like any of Marse&#8217;s books are available here in the States, although two&mdash;<em>Lizard Tails<\/em> and <em>Shanghai Nights<\/em>&mdash;were translated by Nick Caistor and are available in the UK.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad_banner\">\n<a href=\"http:\/\/catalog.openletterbooks.org\/authors\/6\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/College\/translation\/threepercent\/images\/130.jpg\" width=\"460\" height=\"105\" \/><\/a>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is kind of old news, but last week Juan Goytisolo was awarded Spain&#8217;s National Prize for Literature, an extremely prestigious award honoring a writer&#8217;s career.
