{"id":266576,"date":"2008-12-03T14:18:38","date_gmt":"2008-12-03T14:18:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.wdev.rochester.edu\/College\/translation\/threepercent-dev\/2008\/12\/03\/2008-robert-fagles-translation-prize\/"},"modified":"2018-04-16T17:27:32","modified_gmt":"2018-04-16T17:27:32","slug":"2008-robert-fagles-translation-prize","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/College\/translation\/threepercent\/2008\/12\/03\/2008-robert-fagles-translation-prize\/","title":{"rendered":"2008 Robert Fagles Translation Prize"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I can&#8217;t find a listing at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalpoetryseries.org\/\">National Poetry Series website,<\/a> but Lawrence Venuti has been awarded the 2008 Robert Fagles Translation Prize for his translation of <em>Edward Hopper<\/em> by Ernest Farres. <\/p>\n<p>The prize&#8212;which was awarded for the first time last year&#8212;is given each year to a translation who has &#8220;shown exceptional skill in translating a book of contemporary poetry into English.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Venuti is an incredible force in the world of translation and translation studies. He translated from Italian, French, and Catalan and is also the author of <em>The Translator&#8217;s Invisibility: A History of Translation.<\/em> He&#8217;s been awarded a number of grants and fellowships, including ones from the <span class=\"caps\">NEA<\/span>, <span class=\"caps\">NEH<\/span>, and <span class=\"caps\">PEN<\/span>, and in 2007 he received a Guggenheim Fellowship. He currently teaches at Temple University.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve read some of the poems from <em>Edward Hopper<\/em> in <em>Two Lines<\/em>, <em>Calque<\/em>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wordswithoutborders.org\/?author=ErnestFarres\"><em>Words Without Borders<\/em><\/a> and it promises to be an interesting collection. (It&#8217;s coming out next year from Graywolf Press.) Basically, each poem is named after and based on an Edward Hopper painting. Based on that, it&#8217;s sort of surprising that <em>Edward Hopper<\/em> has been &#8220;adapted to the stage in both Catalan and Spanish.&#8221; In addition to writing poetry, Farres is also an editor for the cultural supplement of <em>La Vanguardia.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I can&#8217;t find a listing at the National Poetry Series website, but Lawrence Venuti has been awarded the 2008 Robert Fagles Translation Prize for his translation of Edward Hopper by Ernest Farres.
