As always, all of the finalists are pretty strong, and there are two works in translation up for prizes. Bolano&#8217;s <em>2666<\/em> is a fiction finalist, and Pierre Martory&#8217;s <em>The Landscapist<\/em> is a poetry finalist. <\/p>\n<p>I must say, I&#8217;m not entirely sure why the official listing of the <span class=\"caps\">NBCC<\/span> site references John Ashbery as the translator of the Martory, but doesn&#8217;t list Natasha Wimmer as the translator of <em>2666<\/em>. Probably an oversight, and not the only place where translator&#8217;s names tend to disappear (try looking through a publisher&#8217;s catalog some time and guessing whether certain books are translated or not), but still . . .<\/p>\n<p>I was half-watching the live blog of this event, and liked <a href=\"http:\/\/bookcritics.org\/blog\/archive\/more_bolano_attention\/\">Monica de la Torre&#8217;s comment<\/a> that it was nice that <em>2666<\/em> was honored, <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>but had hoped that other books in translation would have received more attention in this year\u2019s awards season as well. \u201cThere\u2019s just so much out there!\u201c she exclaimed.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>It&#8217;s also really cool that the <a href=\"http:\/\/bookcritics.org\/blog\/archive\/pen_american_center_receives_the_nbccs_ivan_sandrof_award\/\"><span class=\"caps\">PEN<\/span> America Center<\/a> is receiving the NBCC&#8217;s Ivan Sandrof Life Achievement Award.
