{"id":268946,"date":"2009-03-02T14:32:55","date_gmt":"2009-03-02T14:32:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.wdev.rochester.edu\/College\/translation\/threepercent-dev\/2009\/03\/02\/e-books-and-justification\/"},"modified":"2018-04-16T17:24:19","modified_gmt":"2018-04-16T17:24:19","slug":"e-books-and-justification","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/College\/translation\/threepercent\/2009\/03\/02\/e-books-and-justification\/","title":{"rendered":"E-books and justification"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If:book has a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.futureofthebook.org\/blog\/archives\/2009\/02\/why_is_text_on_screens_so_ugly.html\">really cool article<\/a> on something that I hadn&#8217;t yet noticed (not having a kindle, a sony reader, or an iphone): all of the text on these devices is <em>fully justified<\/em>.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>if a computer is going to hyphenate something, it needs to know what language the text is in. This is a job for metadata: electronic books could have an indicator of what language they&#8217;re in, and the reader application could hyphenate automatically. But that won&#8217;t always help: in the text on the Kindle screen, for example, der Depperte isn&#8217;t English and wouldn&#8217;t be recognized as such. A human compositor could catch that; a computer wouldn&#8217;t guess, and would have to default to not breaking it. The same problem will happen with proper names.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>I can see why this is the case. It&#8217;s a difficult problem to solve, so, in that great tradition of computer programming, <em>a<\/em> solution becomes <em>the<\/em> solution because the problem-solvers aren&#8217;t end users themselves.
