M. Forster introduced the Alexandrian Greek poet Constantine Cavafy to the English-speaking world in 1919. Since then, Cavafy\u2019s distinctive tone \u2014 wistfully elegiac but resolutely dry-eyed \u2014 has captivated English-language poets from W. H. Auden to James Merrill to Louise Gl\u00fcck. Auden maintained that Cavafy\u2019s tone seems always to \u201csurvive translation,\u201d and Daniel Mendelsohn\u2019s new translations render that tone more pointedly than ever before.
