{"id":271756,"date":"2009-06-12T13:39:34","date_gmt":"2009-06-12T13:39:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.wdev.rochester.edu\/College\/translation\/threepercent-dev\/2009\/06\/12\/wired-magazine-and-the-challenges-of-contemporary-literature\/"},"modified":"2018-04-16T17:19:52","modified_gmt":"2018-04-16T17:19:52","slug":"wired-magazine-and-the-challenges-of-contemporary-literature","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/College\/translation\/threepercent\/2009\/06\/12\/wired-magazine-and-the-challenges-of-contemporary-literature\/","title":{"rendered":"Wired Magazine and the Challenges of Contemporary Literature"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Thanks to <a href=\"http:\/\/litlicense.blogspot.com\/2009\/06\/eighteen-challenges-in-contemporary.html\">Literary License<\/a> for drawing our attention to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/beyond_the_beyond\/2009\/05\/eighteen-challenges-in-contemporary-literature\">this piece by Bruce Sterling in <em>Wired<\/em><\/a> detailing eighteen challenges for contemporary literature. <\/p>\n<p>This is a pretty broad set of challenges, ranging from some more content based questions (&#8220;Literature is language-based and national; contemporary society is globalizing and polyglot,&#8221; or &#8220;Contemporary literature not confronting issues of general urgency; dominant best-sellers are in former niche genres such as fantasies, romances and teen books&#8221;), to challenges of audience development (&#8220;Means of book promotion, distribution and retail destabilized,&#8221; or &#8220;Ink-on-paper manufacturing is an outmoded, toxic industry with steeply rising costs&#8221;).<\/p>\n<p>Regardless, it&#8217;s a really interesting list that does point to many of the concerns and issues underlying our industry. Here are some of the others I think are most interesting:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Media conglomerates have poor business model; economically rationalized \u201cculture industry\u201d is actively hostile to vital aspects of humane culture.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Long tail balkanizes audiences, disrupts means of canon-building and fragments literary reputation.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Barriers to publication entry have crashed, enabling huge torrent of subliterary and\/or nonliterary textual expression.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cConvergence culture\u201d obliterating former distinctions between media; books becoming one minor aspect of huge tweet\/ blog\/ comics\/ games \/ soundtrack\/ television \/ cinema \/ ancillary-merchandise pro-fan franchises.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"ad_banner\">\n<a href=\"http:\/\/catalog.openletterbooks.org\/subscribe\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/College\/translation\/threepercent\/images\/131.jpg\" \/><\/a>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Thanks to Literary License for drawing our attention to this piece by Bruce Sterling in Wired detailing eighteen challenges for contemporary literature.
