{"id":272336,"date":"2009-07-09T13:18:32","date_gmt":"2009-07-09T13:18:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.wdev.rochester.edu\/College\/translation\/threepercent-dev\/2009\/07\/09\/agents-and-editors\/"},"modified":"2018-04-16T17:19:47","modified_gmt":"2018-04-16T17:19:47","slug":"agents-and-editors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/College\/translation\/threepercent\/2009\/07\/09\/agents-and-editors\/","title":{"rendered":"Agents and Editors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I agree with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.complete-review.com\/saloon\/#mz3\">Michael Orthofer,<\/a> the interaction between super-agent Andrew Wylie and super-awesome <em>Playboy<\/em> editor Amy Grace Loyd over the first-serial rights to Nabokov&#8217;s <em>The Original of Laura<\/em> is a bit gross.<\/p>\n<p>From the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.observer.com\/2009\/daily-transom\/holy-lolita-hefner-hoovers-first-serial-rights-nabokovs-last-novella\"><em>New York Observer<\/em>:<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>It was an inspired method, the flowers serving as a reference to Nabokov\u2019s 1969 novel <em>Ada, or Ardor<\/em>, which was excerpted in Playboy\u2014thus a reminder for Mr. Wylie of the magazine\u2019s long and treasured association with the author. \u201cIt was part of my pitch to Andrew that Nabokov really liked publishing with <em>Playboy<\/em>, and how devoted Hef is to Nabokov and his legacy,\u201d Ms. Loyd said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Mr. Wylie was initially unresponsive.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cI would get nice notes back from him, but he really wouldn\u2019t give me anything,\u201d said Ms. Loyd, who\u2019d curated a special feature marking the 50th anniversary of Nabokov\u2019s <em>Lolita<\/em> as part of her tryout for the job.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Of course, Wylie tried to place this with <em>The New Yorker<\/em>, which apparently wasn&#8217;t all that interested. <\/p>\n<p>So, the super-agent (once referred to as &#8220;The Greediest Man at Frankfurt&#8221;) came crawling back <del>on his knees<\/del> with some insane demands.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>There were a few sticking points in the negotiation, chiefly the fact that Mr. Wylie wanted Ms. Loyd to give an offer on the book without first reading a page of it. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Who does that? Oh, nevermind, don&#8217;t answer that.
