{"id":272876,"date":"2009-07-31T16:29:58","date_gmt":"2009-07-31T16:29:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.wdev.rochester.edu\/College\/translation\/threepercent-dev\/2009\/07\/31\/latest-review-cliffs-by-olivier-adam\/"},"modified":"2018-04-16T14:10:06","modified_gmt":"2018-04-16T14:10:06","slug":"latest-review-cliffs-by-olivier-adam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/College\/translation\/threepercent\/2009\/07\/31\/latest-review-cliffs-by-olivier-adam\/","title":{"rendered":"Latest Review: &#34;Cliffs&#34; by Olivier Adam"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The latest addition to our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/College\/translation\/threepercent\/index.php?s=reviews\">review section,<\/a> is a piece by summer intern Adam Witzel on Olivier Adam&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.skylightbooks.com\/NASApp\/store\/Product?s=showproduct&amp;isbn=9781901285758\"><em>Cliffs<\/em>,<\/a> which came out from Pushkin Press a couple years back.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Olivier Adam is the author of many novels and children\u2019s books, several of which have been adapted for film, including his debut <em>Je vais bien, ne t\u2019en fais pas<\/em>. In 2004 he won the Prix Goncourt for his short story \u201cPasser l\u2019hiver.\u201d He is also a founder and current member of the program planning committee of the \u201cLes Correspondance de Manosque\u201d literary festival.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The protagonist-narrator of <em>Cliffs<\/em> bears some striking similarities to Adam. They share the same first name, are both writers and suffer from depression, which may explain why the novel reads, emotionally, like a real memoir\u2014sans melodrama.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The novel follows the protagonist\u2019s reflections on his life over one night\u2014the twentieth anniversary of his mother\u2019s suicide. He rests in the same hotel room his family stayed in the night of his mother\u2019s death, which is situated on the same sea and cliffs where she killed herself. Lying down, Olivier attempts to move away from his past, and his present is precariously shelved, as if on the same cliff his mother threw herself from.
