The shortlist: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>The Flypaper Factory<\/em>, Andrzej Bart (<span class=\"caps\">WAB<\/span>)<br \/>\nThe writer narrates the imaginary \u0141\u00f3d\u017a trial of Chaim Rumkowski, chairman of the Judenrat in the \u0141\u00f3d\u017a Ghetto.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Bambino<\/em>, Inga Iwasi\u00f3w (\u015awiat Ksi\u0105\u017cki)<br \/>\nIwasi\u00f3w ponders on the identity of the German and Polish town and presents a panorama of the whole of People&#8217;s Poland, from World War II until 1981.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Gestures<\/em>, Ignacy Karpowicz (Wydawnictwo Literackie)<br \/>\nA new novel from the author of Niehalo [&#8220;Uncool&#8221;] and Cud [&#8220;The Miracle&#8221;]. Grzegorz arrives in his provincial native parts to see his ill, aging mother and realizes they have little in common.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Ostrogski Palace<\/em>, Tomasz Pi\u0105tek (<span class=\"caps\">WAB<\/span>)<br \/>\nThe author himself says: &#8220;It&#8217;s a book about someone trying to disentangle himself from being a thing and returning to humanity, being reborn. Having a choice in life.&#8221; Personal memories are mingled here with essays and the fantasy of novels.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Queen of Tiramisu<\/em>, Bohdan S\u0142awi\u0144ski (Jacek Santorski)<br \/>\nThe protagonist of Bohdan S\u0142awi\u0144ski&#8217;s novel is Peter, or rather Petey&#8212;a delicate, sensitive and tender person. The thoughtful boy gets involved with a mature, well-off married woman.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><em>A Song About Dependences and Addictions<\/em>, Eugeniusz Tkaczyszyn-Dycki (Biuro Literackie)<br \/>\nA new book of poetry from the author of the volumes Kamie\u0144 pe\u0142en pokarmu [&#8220;A Stone Full of Nourishment&#8221;], Dzieje rodzin polskich [&#8220;A History of Polish Families&#8221;], winner of the Gdynia Literary Prize.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Turul Goulash<\/em>, Krzysztof Varga (Czarne)<br \/>\nVarga&#8217;s previous novel, Nagrobek z lastryko [&#8220;Terrazzo Tombstone&#8221;], was about Polish history and symbols; now, in this volume of essays, Varga turns to the Hungarians.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I&#8217;m disappointed that Jerzy Pilch&#8217;s <em>March Polonia<\/em> didn&#8217;t make the cut (he was on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/College\/translation\/threepercent\/index.php?id=1964\">longlist<\/a>), but they seem to have a pretty good cross-section of work represented here.<\/p>\n<p>Go to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.culture.pl\/en\/culture\/artykuly\/wy_in_nagroda_nike_2009\">culture.pl<\/a> for more information. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last week they announced the shortlist for the prestigious NIKE Award, which will be awarded on October 4th.
