Yesterday they announced the winner of the National Poetry Series’s Robert Fagles Translation Prize, which carries with it publication by Graywolf Press. This year’s winner is The Rest of the Voyage<\/em> by Bernard No\u00ebl, translated by El\u00e9na Rivera. Here’s the press release:<\/p>\n

The National Poetry Series is pleased to announce that El\u00e9na Rivera has been awarded the 2010 Robert Fagles Translation Prize. Ms. Rivera\u2019s project, The Rest of the Voyage<\/em>, is a translation of the French poet Bernard No\u0451l, and will be published in November 2011 by Graywolf Press. Acclaimed poet and translator Susan Stewart served as judge for this year\u2019s award, responding with this comment: \u201cEl\u00e9na Rivera\u2019s translation of Bernard No\u0451l\u2019s Le Reste du voyage\/The Rest of the Voyage<\/em> is at once original and remarkably faithful\u2026 The succession of poems has a fluency that becomes as mesmerizing as any mode of transport, for Rivera is remarkably adept at varying the lines, landing with emphasis or muting the effect as she follows the speed and light of No\u0451l\u2019s themes.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

El\u00e9na Rivera is a recipient of a 2010 National Endowment for the Arts Literature Fellowship in Translation, a Fundac\u00edon Valpara\u00edso 2009 residency in Moj\u00e1car, Spain, and was awarded the 2007 Witter Bynner Poetry Translator Residency at the Santa Fe Art Institute in New Mexico. Her translation of Isabelle Baladine Howald\u2019s Secret of Breath<\/em> was published by Burning Deck Press 2009. Other translations also can be found in the Chicago Review<\/em>, Tuesday: An Art Project<\/em>, Circumference: Poetry in Translation<\/em>, and Tarpaulin Sky<\/em>. She\u00a0is a poet and the author of\u00a0_Mistakes, Accidents and the Want of Liberty_\u00a0(Barque Press, 2006),\u00a0_Suggestions at Every Turn_\u00a0(Seeing Eye Books, 2005), and most recently Remembrance of Things\u00a0Plastic<\/em> (LRL<\/span> e-editions, 2010). She lives in New York City.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Poet, novelist, essayist, historian and art critic Bernard No\u00ebl received the Prix National de Po\u00e9sie in 1992. He was given the poet laureateship as well as the Grand Prix International Guillevic-Ville de Saint-Malo for his oeuvre in 2005. He is the author of numerous books of poetry, novels and essays, among others: Les Plumes d\u2019\u00c9ros, \u0152uvres I<\/em> (P.O.L., 2010\u2014the first volume of a collected works which P.O.L. is editing and publishing), L\u2019espace du po\u00e8me<\/em>, interviews with D. Sampiero\u00a0 (P.O.L., 2004), Les yeux dans la couleur<\/em> (P.O.L., 2004), Un trajet en hiver<\/em> (POL<\/span>, 2004), Romans d’un regard<\/em> (P.O.L, 2003), La Peau et les Mots<\/em> (P.O.L, 2002), Le roman d\u2019Adam et Eve_\u00a0 (L\u2019Atelier des Brisants, 2001), _La Face de silence<\/em> (P.O.L, 2002), Le Syndrome de Gramsci<\/em> (POL<\/span>, 1994), La Chute des temps<\/em> (Gallimard, 1993), La rumeur de l’air<\/em> (Fata Morgana, 1986). In France, his poems are accessible in three pocketbook editions:\u00a0La Chute des temps<\/em> and Extraits du corps<\/em> from Po\u00e9sie\/Gallimard and Le Reste du voyage\u00a0: Et Autres Po\u00e8mes<\/em> from Points\/po\u00e9sie Seuil. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The National Poetry Series established the Robert Fagles Translation Prize in 2007. This award is given every other year to a translator who has shown exceptional skill in the translation of contemporary international poetry into English. Previous winners are Marilyn Hacker for King of a Hundred Horsemen<\/em> (Farrar, Straus & Giroux, 2008), and Lawrence Venuti for Edward Hopper<\/em> (Graywolf Press, 2009).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Before his death in 2008, Mr. Fagles told National Poetry Series Director, Daniel Halpern, \u201cWhen you honor the act of translation, you stand to make the act of reading what it is:\u00a0 an enterprise of interaction among different times and different regions of the world itself.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
