{"id":281556,"date":"2011-01-17T18:00:00","date_gmt":"2011-01-17T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.wdev.rochester.edu\/College\/translation\/threepercent-dev\/2011\/01\/17\/six-questions-with-charlotte-mandell\/"},"modified":"2018-04-16T16:28:20","modified_gmt":"2018-04-16T16:28:20","slug":"six-questions-with-charlotte-mandell","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/College\/translation\/threepercent\/2011\/01\/17\/six-questions-with-charlotte-mandell\/","title":{"rendered":"Six Questions with Charlotte Mandell"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/catalog.openletterbooks.org\/authors\/25#zone\"><em>Zone<\/em><\/a> has been getting a lot of attention recently, such as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/01\/09\/books\/review\/Burn-t.html?pagewanted=all\">this review in the <em>New York Times<\/em><\/a> and in the recent issue of <a href=\"http:\/\/nplusonemag.com\/print-issue-10\/\"><em>N+1<\/em>.<\/a> (I also found a copy on display at the Bay City Public Library&#8212;my hometown library&#8212;and someone had actually checked it out!)<\/p>\n<p>One of the first reviews of <em>Zone<\/em> actually appeared in the <a href=\"http:\/\/quarterlyconversation.com\/zone-by-mathias-enard\"><em>Quarterly Conversation<\/em><\/a> last year (or maybe even in 2009 . . ), and to celebrate the launch of the English-language version, Scott Esposito <a href=\"http:\/\/conversationalreading.com\/six-questions-for-charlotte-mandell-translator-of-zone-by-mathias-enard\">interviewed translator Charlotte Mandell:<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><b>Scott Esposito: According to the information on your website, you\u2019ve translated some 28 books since 2001, including The Kindly Ones, which is nearly 1,000 pages. How long were you working on Zone, and how did it compare, in terms of difficulty, rate of progress, etc to other books you\u2019ve translated?<\/b><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Charlotte Mandell: Good grief! I thought that was a mistake when I read it\u201328 books in 10 years does seem like a lot . . . It took me about 6 months to translate <em>Zone<\/em>, and then a few more months to revise it. I\u2019ve almost always worked under pressing deadlines, so I\u2019m used to working fast, and once I\u2019d started translating <em>Zone<\/em> it was honestly very hard to stop. For one thing, there are no obvious resting places, since there are no periods! So I had to mark out ahead of time where I would stop for the day, so that I didn\u2019t overdo it. It was really a joy translating <em>Zone<\/em>, since it felt like a long prose poem in which I could give myself free rein.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p><b>SE: Funny that you mention that. I felt that unstoppability while reading (and others have told me they did too), and it seems it works the same for translating the book. Like you, I had to tell myself to slow down, and one way to do it was to look up just a fraction of the references in this book. There are tons! At the end of the day, the book feels like a cross between a postmodern novel of information and a modernist stream of conscious novel, maybe something William Gaddis would have come up with. How do you classify it, and do you see any novels in the French landscape that resemble or contextualize it?<\/b><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p>CM: I suppose the first book that comes to mind as a sort of precursor to Zone is Michel Butor\u2019s <em>La Modification<\/em> (published in English as <em>Second Thoughts<\/em><sup class=\"footnote\"><a href=\"#fn6677269384d3476eca2564\">1<\/a><\/sup>). It too is about a man on a train journey, and it\u2019s narrated solely in the second person. The entire narration revolves around the narrator\u2019s thoughts and memories, and nothing actually \u201chappens\u201d in the book (except that the narrator changes his mind\u2014hence the title\u2014by the end of the book).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p>You\u2019re right, there are a lot of references, and I think all the books mentioned in <em>Zone<\/em> influence Enard\u2019s narrative in subtle but meaningful ways: Tsirkas\u2019 <em>Drifting Cities<\/em>; William Burroughs\u2019 <em>Naked Lunch<\/em>; Pound\u2019s <em>Cantos<\/em>; <em>Finnegans Wake<\/em>; Apollinaire\u2019s <em>Zone<\/em>; C\u00e9line\u2019s <em>Journey to the End of the Night<\/em>; and especially Malaparte\u2019s masterful <em>Kaputt<\/em>, one of the most underappreciated (and well-written) war novels I can think of, narrated from the point of view of the losing side.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p>In terms of the contemporary French literary landscape, I think <em>Zone<\/em> shares a lot of similarities with <em>The Kindly Ones<\/em>: in fact I can think of no other French novel today that mentions Bard\u00e8che, Brasillach, and Burroughs!\u2013though I think it was Edgar Rice Burroughs in <em>The Kindly Ones<\/em> . . . Both narrators are fascists (a recovering fascist in the case of <em>Zone<\/em>, but a fascist nonetheless), and both are consumed by their respective wars. Also, both <em>The Kindly Ones<\/em> and <em>Zone<\/em> incorporate dreams, fantasies, and memories into the narrative in interesting ways\u2013the boundaries between fantasy and reality are often blurred.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p>I think Enard and Claro also have some things in common, in the risks they take in terms of narration and style. Claro\u2019s recent <em>Madman Bovary<\/em> comes to mind, if only for its narrative inventiveness, and for its way of portraying a narrator consumed by a book (the way _Zone_\u2019s narrator is consumed by a briefcase). I heard that Enard and Claro traveled around Europe once performing a magic show\u2013I\u2019m not sure if I dreamt that, but it sounds very apt!<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/conversationalreading.com\/six-questions-for-charlotte-mandell-translator-of-zone-by-mathias-enard\">other four questions<\/a> are even more interesting, and definitely worth checking out . . .<\/p>\n<p id=\"fn6677269384d3476eca2564\" class=\"footnote\"><sup>1<\/sup> Actually, I believe the American edition was <em>A Change of Heart.<\/em> Just a footnote for those interested in reading this very interesting Butor book . . . though maybe not as interesting as <em>Passing Time.<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"ad_banner\">\n<a href=\"http:\/\/catalog.openletterbooks.org\/authors\/25-enard\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/College\/translation\/threepercent\/images\/545.jpg\"  \/><\/a>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Zone has been getting a lot of attention recently, such as this review in the New York Times and in the recent issue of N+1.
