Fullerton St., Chicago, IL<\/p>\n<p>French poet, novelist and playwright Raymond Roussel (1877-1933) faced<br \/>\nalmost universal incomprehension and derision during his lifetime for<br \/>\nworks that neglected traditional character and plot development in<br \/>\nfavor of the construction of elaborate descriptions and anecdotes<br \/>\nbased on hidden wordplay. While the premieres of his self-financed<br \/>\nplays caused near-riots, admirers included Surrealists Andre Breton<br \/>\nand Robert Desnos. who called <em>The Dust of Suns<\/em> (1926) \u201canother<br \/>\nincursion into the unknown which you alone are exploring.\u201d Roussel<br \/>\nnever enjoyed the posthumous fame of his hero Jules Verne, but he has<br \/>\nexercised a powerful fascination upon later writers including the<br \/>\nFrench Oulipo group, John Ashbery, Michel Foucault and Michael Palmer.<br \/>\nNew editions of his novels and poetry are forthcoming this year from<br \/>\nPrinceton and Dalkey Archive.<\/p>\n<p>Like much of Roussel\u2019s writing, <em>The Dust of Suns<\/em> has a colonial<br \/>\nsetting. Against the backdrop of fin-de-siecle French Guiana, a<br \/>\nconvoluted treasure hunt unfolds. The Frenchman Blache seeks his<br \/>\nuncle\u2019s inheritance, a cache of gems whose location lies at the end of<br \/>\na chain of clues that includes a sonnet engraved on a skull and the<br \/>\nrecollections of an albino shepherdess. Meanwhile, his daughter<br \/>\nSolange is in love with Jacques\u2014but all Jacques knows of his parentage<br \/>\nis a mysterious tattoo on his shoulder\u2026<\/p>\n<p>This script-in-hand performance of Roussel\u2019s play, directed by John<br \/>\nBeer with design by Caroline Picard, features an array of Chicago<br \/>\nwriters and artists.
