{"id":285806,"date":"2011-06-28T14:55:26","date_gmt":"2011-06-28T14:55:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.wdev.rochester.edu\/College\/translation\/threepercent-dev\/2011\/06\/28\/susan-bernofsky-on-the-marketplace-of-ideas\/"},"modified":"2018-04-16T16:17:06","modified_gmt":"2018-04-16T16:17:06","slug":"susan-bernofsky-on-the-marketplace-of-ideas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/College\/translation\/threepercent\/2011\/06\/28\/susan-bernofsky-on-the-marketplace-of-ideas\/","title":{"rendered":"Susan Bernofsky on The Marketplace of Ideas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This week&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/colinmarshall.libsyn.com\/the-literary-in-between-translator-susan-bernofsky\">Marketplace of Ideas<\/a> features an hour-long interview with super-translator Susan Bernofsky about Robert Walser, Yoko Tawada, Kobo Abe, and &#8220;the uses of literary hybridity.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Definitely worth listening to (and subscribing to on iTunes&#8212;this is a consistently good podcast), and Susan&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/translationista.blogspot.com\/2011\/06\/walser-on-marketplace-of-ideas.html\">write up of the experience<\/a> is interesting as well.<\/p>\n<p>*<\/p>\n<p>Digressing here for a minute, but Kobo Abe doesn&#8217;t get near the attention that he deserves. <em>The Box Man<\/em> is nothing short of fucking brilliant and absolutely deserves to be included in conversations about Beckett or other Beckett-esque authors. Vintage reissued <em>The Ark Sakura<\/em>, a more straightforward, but incredibly fun novel a couple years back, but unfortunately I don&#8217;t think many people noticed . . . It&#8217;s true that some of his books are less than amazing, but I still think he&#8217;s an author ripe for rediscovery by the fans of Bolano and Aira and Sebald and that set.
