Focusing upon Murakami\u2019s latest novel, <em>1Q84<\/em>, panelists raise such problems as shifting tense, visual wordplay, and strategies for handling the English expressions and American references that appear natural in the English translation, but which stand out in other European languages, as they do in Japanese.<\/p>\n<p>Mette Holm: \u201cIn Search of Lost Time in Murakami: Movement Between Past and Present\u201d<br \/>\nIka Kaminka: \u201cStyle and the Translator: Re-Exporting English Idioms out of Japanese\u201d<br \/>\nAnna Zielinska-Elliott: \u201cVisual Presence and Subjective Absence: Conjuring Japanese in European Languages\u201d<\/p>\n<p>*<\/p>\n<p><b>11:00 &#8211; 12:15<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Linguistics &amp; the Culture of Humor<\/b><\/p>\n<p>What makes an original text humorous and what should a translator understand about language, culture, and linguistics\u2014both in regard to the source and target languages\u2014to make this humor translatable?
