Post and Kaija Straumanis talk with Philip Graham &#8212; a co-founder and current nonfiction editor of <em>Ninth Letter<\/em>, author of several books, including <a href=\"http:\/\/press.uchicago.edu\/ucp\/books\/book\/chicago\/M\/bo8195836.html\"><em>The Moon, Come to Earth:Dispatches from Lisbon<\/em>,<\/a> &#8212; about Portuguese culture and literature, specifically the works of Gon\u00e7alo Tavares, whose book <a href=\"http:\/\/ttupress.org\/books\/series\/the-americas\/the-neighborhood-cloth\"><em>The Neighborhood<\/em><\/a> is coming out this month with Philip&#8217;s introduction. (Which will appear here on Three Percent in the near future.)<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a lot of references included in the podcast this week, the main ones being to <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sintra\">Sintra,<\/a> an amazing town just outside of Lisbon that was once the playground of the aristocracy. It&#8217;s <span class=\"caps\">LOADED<\/span> with castles and palaces and other intriguing estates. <\/p>\n<p>The main stop is the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pena_National_Palace\">Pena Palace<\/a> which looks a little something like this:<\/p>\n<p><txp_image id=\"1352\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Yes, this is a real place. <\/p>\n<p>The part of Sintra I&#8217;m most obsessed with though is the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Quinta_da_Regaleira\">Quinta de Regaleira,<\/a> which you should really read about because it&#8217;s got all the intrigue <span class=\"caps\">AND<\/span> underground tunnels that end in an &#8220;Initiation Well&#8221;:<\/p>\n<p><txp_image id=\"1362\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Anyway, enjoy this podcast&#8212;I think it&#8217;s one of the best we&#8217;ve done.<\/p>\n<p>And this week&#8217;s music is the suspension-building <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/4KnUBu8SFk0\">Intro<\/a> by The xx.<\/p>\n<p>As always you can subscribe to the podcast in iTunes by clicking <a href=\"http:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/three-percent-podcast\/id434696686\">here<\/a>.
