{"id":298656,"date":"2014-07-10T18:00:00","date_gmt":"2014-07-10T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.wdev.rochester.edu\/College\/translation\/threepercent-dev\/2014\/07\/10\/mexico-vs-usa-world-cup-of-literature-semifinals\/"},"modified":"2018-04-16T15:12:36","modified_gmt":"2018-04-16T15:12:36","slug":"mexico-vs-usa-world-cup-of-literature-semifinals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/College\/translation\/threepercent\/2014\/07\/10\/mexico-vs-usa-world-cup-of-literature-semifinals\/","title":{"rendered":"Mexico vs. USA [World Cup of Literature: Semifinals]"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><txp_image id=\"7382\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Yesterday&#8217;s semifinal&#8212;which saw Roberto Bola\u00f1o secure a place in the <span class=\"caps\">WCL<\/span> Championship with <em>By Night in Chile<\/em> &#8212;is a tough one to top, but I think we did it. Today&#8217;s match features upstart Valeria Luiselli from Mexico, whose <em>first novel<\/em>, <em>Faces in the Crowd<\/em>, is up against David Foster Wallace and his posthumous book, <em>The Pale King.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Luiselli got to this match by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/College\/translation\/threepercent\/index.php?id=11432\">sliding past the Croatian representative Dubravka Ugresic and her <em>Baba Yaga Laid an Egg<\/em> 3-2,<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/College\/translation\/threepercent\/index.php?id=11652\">running rampant over Australia and Murnane&#8217;s <em>Barley Patch<\/em> by a score of 3-0,<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/College\/translation\/threepercent\/index.php?id=11712\">cruising past Uruguay and Mario Benedetti&#8217;s <em>The Rest Is Jungle<\/em> 7-0.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"caps\">DFW<\/span> started with a tough matchup against Portugal&#8217;s Gon\u00e7alo Tavares and his novel <em>Jerusalem<\/em>, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/College\/translation\/threepercent\/index.php?id=11472\">prevailed 3-2.<\/a> He then <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/College\/translation\/threepercent\/index.php?id=11672\">took down Belgium&#8217;s <em>The Misfortunates<\/em> by Dimitry Verhulst by a score of 3-1,<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/College\/translation\/threepercent\/index.php?id=11722\">just got by France&#8217;s Michel Houellebecq and <em>The Map and the Territory<\/em>, 4-3.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Although <span class=\"caps\">DFW<\/span> is a household name, this one could go either way . . . <\/p>\n<p><b>Scott Esposito: Mexico<\/b><\/p>\n<p>An actual book has to beat some notes hewn together by an editor. So <em>Faces<\/em> takes it.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><b><center>Mexico 1 &#8211; <span class=\"caps\">USA<\/span> 0<\/center><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Chad W. Post: Mexico<\/b><\/p>\n<p>I love <span class=\"caps\">DFW<\/span>, but I think Luiselli deserves a spot in the finals with her incredibly well crafted <em>Faces in the Crowd.<\/em> <\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><b><center>Mexico 2 &#8211; <span class=\"caps\">USA<\/span> 0<\/center><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Lance Edmonds: <span class=\"caps\">USA<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Before the tournament started, I thought <em>Your Face Tomorrow<\/em> was a lock for the finals. I guess that&#8217;s why you play the games.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><b><center>Mexico 2 &#8211; <span class=\"caps\">USA<\/span> 1<\/center><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Tom Roberge: <span class=\"caps\">USA<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m just going to plagiarize <a href=\"http:\/\/deadspin.com\/5794900\/david-foster-wallace-wrote-a-book-about-you\">myself<\/a>. \u201cThe volume of perspectives in the book, the scope of humanness in these characters, is Wallace&#8217;s point: that as interesting as war orphans or autodidact artists or amoral professors are, so are paper pushers, if not for the details of their lives then for the substance of them, for the way they cope with a boredom that is as much a part of modern Western life as sex, war, or free trade. And then borrow a famous blurb for DeLillo\u2019s <em>Underworld<\/em>, from Michael Ondatje, which I think applies here just as aptly: &#8220;The book is an aria and a wolf-whistle of our half century. It contains multitudes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><b><center>Mexico 2 &#8211; <span class=\"caps\">USA<\/span> 2<\/center><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Lori Feathers: <span class=\"caps\">USA<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><em>Faces<\/em> is a smart book with an interesting structure of doubling back on itself.  \u201cHorizontal vertigo,\u201d a phrase that Luiselli uses, is a good description of that structure. But somehow I still felt distanced from the characters&#8217; (or is it really just one character&#8217;s?) descent into crazy because the book is over-constructed\u2014like seeing more nails sticking out of a wooden frame than are needed. I didn\u2019t feel trapped in a mad mind like, for instance, reading <em>The Yellow Wallpaper<\/em>, and that made the narrative less compelling than it could have been. <\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><b><center>Mexico 2 &#8211; <span class=\"caps\">USA<\/span> 3<\/center><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Laura Radosh: Mexico<\/b><\/p>\n<p>After forcing myself to finish <em>Infinite Jest<\/em> only to find out the joke was on the reader I was sure that another <span class=\"caps\">DFW<\/span> tome would be no match for <em>Faces in the Crowd.<\/em> But after page 6 of <em>Pale King<\/em>, I was hooked. That is some fancy footwork. Goal for <span class=\"caps\">USA<\/span>!<\/p>\n<p>But although I appreciate the fact that editor Michael Pietsch resisted cutting out dozens of pages just because his author could no longer object, <span class=\"caps\">DFW<\/span> gets a yellow card for wasting time. Besides, the <span class=\"caps\">USA<\/span> never makes it to the finals in the real World Cup.<\/p>\n<p>Mexico evens the scores for that pretty little book in the last minute of extra time and gets a dramatic win on penalties.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><b><center>Mexico 3 &#8211; <span class=\"caps\">USA<\/span> 3<\/center><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Will Evans: <span class=\"caps\">USA<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Dude this is cancer-inducing stress. I love Valeria; <em>Faces in the Crowd<\/em> is great. But I have to vote for <span class=\"caps\">DFW<\/span>. <em>Faces in the Crowd<\/em> is like a hello to the world from a brilliant new author, the process of an artist finding her voice; and her voice, the only female voice left in the tournament, one of precious few in the entire World Cup of Literature, scored the opening goal for Mexico against the weak American backline (all hype?!), but the Americans pressed, they&#8217;d been honed to a veteran&#8217;s precision and quickly countered. <em>The Pale King<\/em> is the final goodbye for a legend, a fully realized literary idea, a narrative voice that is as powerful as it is precise (which one can&#8217;t often say of 550-page &#8220;unfinished&#8221; final novels). These two books slugged it out for the remainder of the game, and it was in <span class=\"caps\">DFW<\/span>&#8217;s philosophical musings on the state of twenty-first-century existence that the game winner was scored. <em>Faces in the Crowd<\/em> packs a punch far greater than its 150 pages, and I would peg Luiselli&#8217;s next novel as the odds-on favorite to reach the finals of the 2018 World Cup of Literature, she has many, many, many more World Cups of Literature ahead of her, and this is the last hurrah for <span class=\"caps\">DFW<\/span>, and he makes it to the final by the skin of his teeth. <span class=\"caps\">RIP<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><b><center>Mexico 3 &#8211; <span class=\"caps\">USA<\/span> 4<\/center><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Ryan Ries: <span class=\"caps\">USA<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Mexico is certainly the Cinderella story of this tournament, earning a berth in the semifinals against three world-renowned (and, incidentally, dead) literary powerhouses. And, for the most part, its success is justified: <em>Faces in the Crowd<\/em> is a spare, punchy little book, impressive in construction and economy, but the reader can&#8217;t escape the feeling that you&#8217;ve read this all before somewhere (shades of Bola\u00f1o, Aira, and, to a lesser extent, Moya, to name a few fellow <span class=\"caps\">WCOL<\/span> competitors). <em>The Pale King<\/em> isn&#8217;t without flaws, but it&#8217;s an original, mature, occasionally brilliant work, and it wins the match going away.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><b><center>Mexico 3 &#8211; <span class=\"caps\">USA<\/span> 5<\/center><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>P.T. Smith: <span class=\"caps\">USA<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><em>Faces in the Crowd<\/em> is a wonderful debut, the discovery of the World Cup of Literature for me, but <em>Pale King<\/em> scores an early goal with bizarre powers (mind-reading, talking baby, ghosts) of many of its characters without a detachment from reality. Page by page, <em>Faces in the Crowd<\/em> is more entertaining, rewarding, and rush after rush to the goal is eventually rewarded with an equalizer. The heights of <em>Pale King<\/em> reach a greater lever though, the tie is preserved and we go to PKs. There, the focus, to attention to detail and ability to accomplish repetitive tasks without fault, serves <em>Pale King<\/em> and takes it to victory. <\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><b><center>Mexico 3 &#8211; <span class=\"caps\">USA<\/span> 6<\/center><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Katrine \u00d8gaard Jensen: Mexico<\/b><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not that <em>Pale King<\/em> isn&#8217;t interesting. It&#8217;s not that the book&#8217;s Pulitzer nomination isn&#8217;t interesting. It&#8217;s just . . . I&#8217;m recommending <em>Faces In The Crowd<\/em> to everyone I know. Maybe it&#8217;s because that book is more interesting.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><b><center>Mexico 4 &#8211; <span class=\"caps\">USA<\/span> 6<\/center><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Mauro Javier Cardenas: Mexico<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Is it because I am not Caucasian American that I don&#8217;t light candles to Saint <span class=\"caps\">DFW<\/span>? Probably not. I enjoyed Good Old Neon, parts of <em>Pale King<\/em>. I can never make it pass page 100 of <em>Infinite Jest<\/em> due to extreme boredom though. Que le vamos a hacer. Viva Mexico, carajo!<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><b><center>Mexico 5 &#8211; <span class=\"caps\">USA<\/span> 6<\/center><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Kaija Straumanis: Mexico<\/b><\/p>\n<p>A year or so ago, I was watching TV and wound up seeing a game played by <span class=\"caps\">UANL<\/span> Tigres, a professional Mexican football club. Their uniforms were bright yellow, emblazoned with the logo of their sponsor, which I read as: <span class=\"caps\">BANANAMEX<\/span>. It seemed appropriate. I then spent the next 60 minutes or so shouting \u201cGO <span class=\"caps\">BANANA<\/span>!\u201d and things like \u201cGET <span class=\"caps\">ANOTHER<\/span> <span class=\"caps\">BANANA<\/span> <span class=\"caps\">GOAL<\/span>!\u201d at the television, before I realized that the logo on their banana-yellow jerseys actually read \u201cBANAMEX.\u201d Which is a bank. Not a tropical fruit. Regardless, that night, <span class=\"caps\">UANL<\/span> Tigres became my default favorite soccer team. They aren\u2019t particularly good, they have absolutely nothing to do with bananas, but they have spirit, and they play with heart.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m one of the people who was left depressed after Mexico\u2019s loss in the Real World Cup last week. I don\u2019t want to go into the obnoxiousness of statements on how a team \u201cdeserves\u201d to win\u2014but Mexico deserved to have a fair ending to that game. And in our World Cup of Literature, where there are no champion floppers and no tasteless fans chanting \u201cVir-gin! Vir-gin! Vir-gin!\u201d at the indifferent and unaware refs on the flatscreens overhead, Mexico actually gets a fair chance to represent itself and fight for its place in the finals, and for <em>Faces in the Crowd<\/em> to even win it all. Admittedly, I haven\u2019t read <em>The Pale King<\/em>, though I want to, and I know I\u2019ll probably like the book\u2014I just don\u2019t want to leave my favorite in the gathering dust and pick up a new team in the final stretch. Everyone\u2019s entitled to their bias, and I\u2019m going with mine. Mexico all the way!<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><b><center>Mexico 6 &#8211; <span class=\"caps\">USA<\/span> 6<\/center><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Elianna Kan: Mexico<\/b><\/p>\n<p>While I tip my hat to <span class=\"caps\">DFW<\/span> for his literary project and though I understand the tremendous undertaking that was the posthumous publication of <em>Pale King<\/em>, the novel simply does not stand up to his other work and is merely a more garbled, fragmented, inconsistent exploration of the same deeply depressing themes. For the sheer power of these themes and his exploration of them, Team <span class=\"caps\">USA<\/span> earns a couple goals, but for the lack of a consistently impressive narrative framework and for what feels like a lazier deployment of those themes in this as opposed to his previous works, the win goes to team Mexico for never waking me from the dream, for at least making a consistent and lyrical effort to construct the dream with whatever tools were at Luiselli&#8217;s disposal.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><b><center>Mexico 7 &#8211; <span class=\"caps\">USA<\/span> 6<\/center><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Upset!
