This week’s podcast is mostly about this BBC<\/span> article<\/a> on Hieroglyph,<\/a> a collaborative project between scientists and science-fiction writers that was inspired by the Neal Stephenson article Innovation Starvation.<\/a> Basically, this is a call to create fewer dystopian novels, and more positive sci-fi ideas that can help inspire the scientists of tomorrow. More or less. <\/p>\n

We also read some fan letters (email us at threepercentpodcast@gmail.com), rave about Utopia<\/em><\/a> and rant about film crews. <\/p>\n

Finally, just a reminder that we’ll be discussing Roberto Bola\u00f1o’s A Little Lumpen Novelita<\/em><\/a> later this month, and we’d love to hear your thoughts about the book. Email us by September 24th with any questions, comments, thoughts, and we’ll incorporate them into our discussion. <\/p>\n

We’re planning on doing more of these “book club” episodes in the future, with the new Denis Johnson book<\/a> and Jean-Patrick Manchette’s The Mad and the Bad<\/em><\/a> (and the graphic novel version, Run Like Crazy, Run Like Hell<\/em><\/a>) already on the list. This week’s music is the theme song from Utopia.<\/em> (The composer, Juan Cristobal Tapia De Veer, won the Royal Television Society Craft & Design Award for “best original music” in November 2013. That’s great, but mostly I just want to share this quote from the jury: “Startlingly original scoring of hyper-reality, and unlike anything we\u2019ve heard before. The winner\u2019s work blurred the lines between sound design and score, creating a soundtrack that the jury said felt like it was being played inside your head.”)<\/p>\n
