{"id":301836,"date":"2015-07-08T20:30:00","date_gmt":"2015-07-08T20:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.wdev.rochester.edu\/College\/translation\/threepercent-dev\/2015\/07\/08\/colombia-vs-germany-womens-world-cup-of-literature-semifinals\/"},"modified":"2018-04-16T14:57:32","modified_gmt":"2018-04-16T14:57:32","slug":"colombia-vs-germany-womens-world-cup-of-literature-semifinals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/College\/translation\/threepercent\/2015\/07\/08\/colombia-vs-germany-womens-world-cup-of-literature-semifinals\/","title":{"rendered":"Colombia vs. Germany [Women&#39;s World Cup of Literature: Semifinals]"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><center><txp_image id=\"11792\"\/><\/center><\/p>\n<p><em>Oryx &amp; Crake<\/em> by Margaret Atwood is already set to represent Canada in the <span class=\"caps\">WWCOL<\/span> championship, so now we&#8217;re ready to find out who she&#8217;s going to face off against between Colombia&#8217;s representative (<em>Delirium<\/em> by Laura Restrepo) or Germany&#8217;s (<em>The Hottest Dishes of the Tartar Cuisine<\/em> by Alina Bronsky). <\/p>\n<p>Laura Restrepo&#8217;s <em>Delirium<\/em> (Colombia) got to this point by by getting past <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/College\/translation\/threepercent\/index.php?id=14782\">England&#8217;s <em>Life After Life<\/em><\/a> and then <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/College\/translation\/threepercent\/index.php?id=14932\">Mexico&#8217;s <em>Texas: The Great Theft<\/em><\/a> before knocking out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/College\/translation\/threepercent\/index.php?id=14952\">Costa Rica&#8217;s <em>Assault on Paradise<\/em><\/a> by the convincing score of 6-1. <\/p>\n<p>Alina Bronsky&#8217;s <em>The Hottest Dishes of the Tartar Cuisine<\/em> cruised into this semis, earning a bye after beating up on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/College\/translation\/threepercent\/index.php?id=14822\">Thailand entry, <em>The Happiness of Kati<\/em><\/a> by the score of 5-1, then taking apart <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/College\/translation\/threepercent\/index.php?id=14882\">C\u00f4te d&#8217;Ivoire&#8217;s <em>Queen Pokou<\/em>,<\/a> 4-1. <\/p>\n<p>And now . . . <\/p>\n<p><b>Hal Hlavinka: Germany<\/b><\/p>\n<p><em>The Hottest Dishes of the Tartar Cuisine<\/em> wins in a cover art penalty shootout!<\/p>\n<p><center><b>Germany 1 &#8211; Colombia 0<\/b><\/center><\/p>\n<p><b>Meredith Miller: Germany<\/b><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m picking <em>The Hottest Dishes of the Tartar Cuisine<\/em>, because Rosa is the type of manipulative, dirty-playing, spit-firing character you would not wish upon your worst enemy, but is so fun to explore her inner psyche as she wreaks havoc on her fictional world.<\/p>\n<p><center><b>Germany 2 &#8211; Colombia 0<\/b><\/center><\/p>\n<p><b>P.T. Smith: Colombia<\/b><\/p>\n<p>With the tension and suspense spread across and between the varied narrators, <em>Delirium<\/em> continues its run to the Cup.<\/p>\n<p><center><b>Germany 2 &#8211; Colombia 1<\/b><\/center><\/p>\n<p><b>Kalah McCaffrey: Colombia<\/b><\/p>\n<p>A tough call&#8212;both teams sport unhinged but powerful women and constant, unsettling action. My personal favorite is Germany, with Rosalinda carrying the team in the fashion of Lionel Messi. But as Colombia&#8217;s got more depth to the roster, they eke out the win.<\/p>\n<p><center><b>Germany 2 &#8211; Colombia 2<\/b><\/center><\/p>\n<p><b>Hilary Plum: Germany<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Alina Bronsky&#8217;s <em>The Hottest Dishes of the Tartar Cuisine<\/em> edges out Laura Restrepo&#8217;s excellent Delirium, if only because Bronsky&#8217;s cruel and indefatigable protagonist, Rosa Achmetowna, is willing to do anything to win. Both novels are very compelling, but a Women&#8217;s World Cup should maybe have a special place for a character as boldly &#8220;unlikeable&#8221; as Bronsky&#8217;s remarkable Rosa<\/p>\n<p><center><b>Germany 3 &#8211; Colombia 2<\/b><\/center><\/p>\n<p><b>Rhea Lyons: Germany<\/b><\/p>\n<p>I can&#8217;t decide between <em>Delirium<\/em> and <em>Tartar<\/em> . . . <em>Tartar<\/em> is so good!! <span class=\"caps\">ARGH<\/span>, I\u2019ll go with that.<\/p>\n<p><center><b>Germany 4 &#8211; Colombia 2<\/b><\/center><\/p>\n<p><b>Mythili Rao: Germany<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Three generations of quirky Soviet women, what&#8217;s not to love? <\/p>\n<p><center><b>Germany 5 &#8211; Colombia 2<\/b><\/center><\/p>\n<p>There we go!
