{"id":399502,"date":"2018-05-15T10:00:19","date_gmt":"2018-05-15T14:00:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/College\/translation\/threepercent\/?p=399502"},"modified":"2018-05-14T19:01:18","modified_gmt":"2018-05-14T23:01:18","slug":"2018-best-translated-book-award-finalists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/College\/translation\/threepercent\/2018\/05\/15\/2018-best-translated-book-award-finalists\/","title":{"rendered":"2018 Best Translated Book Award Finalists"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>May 15, 2018\u2014Ten works of fiction and six poetry collections remain in the running for this year\u2019s Best Translated Book Awards following the announcement of the two shortlists at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.themillions.com\">The Millions<\/a> website this morning.<\/p>\n<p>Featuring a blend of contemporary writers and modern classics, of writers from cultures around the world, and of a variety of stylistic approaches, these shortlists have something for everyone.<\/p>\n<p>On the fiction side of things, there are books from eight different countries and six languages, ranging from Taiwanese author Wu He\u2019s <em>Remains of Life <\/em>to the postmodern machinations of Gu\u00f0bergur Bergsson\u2019s<em> T\u00f3mas J\u00f3nsson, Bestseller<\/em> to Romina Paula\u2019s <em>August. <\/em>Two other titles of note are <em>Compass <\/em>by Mathias \u00c9nard, which is a finalist for the 2018 Albertine Prize, and <em>Old Rendering Plant <\/em>by Wolfgang Hilbig, translated by Isabel Fargo Cole, which won this year\u2019s Helen and Kurt Wolff Translator\u2019s Prize.<\/p>\n<p>The poetry finalists are also quite diverse, featuring books from six different countries, including Greece (<em>Before Lyricism <\/em>by Eleni Vakalo) to Japan (<em>Spiral Staircase <\/em>by Hirato Renkichi) to Brazil (<em>Paraguayan Sea <\/em>by Wilson Bueno).<\/p>\n<p>Winners from both categories will be announced Thursday, May 31<sup>st<\/sup> as part of the New York Rights Fair at the Metropolitan Pavilion (125 West 18<sup>th<\/sup> St.). The announcement will be preceded by a panel starting at 4:30 on \u201cTranslated Literature Today: A Decade of Growth.\u201d They will also be announced simultaneously at <a href=\"https:\/\/themillions.com\/\">The Millions<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to grant funds from the Amazon Literary Partnership, the winning authors and translators will each receive $5,000 cash prizes. Three Percent at the University of Rochester founded the BTBAs in 2008, and over the past six years, the Amazon Literary Partnership has contributed more than $140,000 to international authors and their translators through the BTBA.<\/p>\n<p>Past winners of the fiction award include: <em>Chronicle of the Murdered House <\/em>by L\u00facio Cardoso, translated from the Portuguese by Margaret Jull Costa and Robin Patterson; <em>Signs Preceding the End of the World <\/em>by Yuri Herrera, translated from the Spanish by Lisa Dillman; <em>The Last Lover <\/em>by Can Xue, translated from the Chinese by Annelise Finegan Wasmoen; <em>Seiobo There Below <\/em>and <em>Satantango<\/em>, both by L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Krasznahorkai, and translated from the Hungarian by Ottilie Mulzet and George Szirtes respectively; <em>Stone Upon Stone <\/em>by Wies\u0142aw My\u015bliwski, translated from the Polish by Bill Johnston; and <em>The True Deceiver <\/em>by Tove Jansson, translated from the Swedish by Thomas Teal.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of the poetry award, past winners include: <em>Extracting the Stone of Madness <\/em>by Alejandra Pizarnik, translated from the Spanish by Yvette Siegert; <em>Rilke Shake <\/em>by Ang\u00e9lica Freitas, translated from the Portuguese by Hilary Kaplan; <em>Diorama <\/em>by Roc\u00edo Cer\u00f3n, translated from the Spanish by Anna Rosenwong; <em>The Guest in the Wood <\/em>by Elisa Biagini, translated from the Italian by Diana Thow, Sarah Stickney, and Eugene Ostashevsky; <em>Wheel with a Single Spoke <\/em>by Nichita St\u0103nescu, translated from the Romanian by Sean Cotter; and <em>Spectacle &amp; Pigsty <\/em>by Kiwao Nomura, translated from the Japanese by Kyoko Yoshida and Forrest Gander.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s fiction jury is made up of: Caitlin Baker (University Book Store, Seattle), Kasia Bartoszy\u0144ska (Monmouth College), Tara Cheesman-Olmsted (<a href=\"https:\/\/readeratlarge.com\/\">Reader at Large<\/a>), Lori Feathers (<a href=\"http:\/\/interabangbooks.com\/\">Interabang Books<\/a>), Mark Haber (writer, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brazosbookstore.com\/\">Brazos Bookstore<\/a>), Adam Hetherington (author), Jeremy Keng (reader, freelance reviewer), Bradley Schmidt (translator), and P.\u00a0T.
