Zoya Leybin was born in Riga, Latvia, where her musical life began at the age five. By fifteen, she was making solo appearances and performed chamber music throughout the former Soviet Union. After graduating with a Master degree from the Moscow Conservatory, Zoya played in various ensembles before being appointed as the concertmaster of the Latvian State Chamber Orchestra.
She left the former Soviet Union and immigrated to the United States, where she became a member of the San Francisco Symphony playing in both violin sections for 27 years.
Zoya has always been a dedicated teacher, a coaching member of the San Francisco Youth Orchestra, and she was on the faculty of the San Francisco Conservatory where she taught an audition prep master class for strings. Also, Zoya was a member of the original Stanford String Quartet.
According to the citation from the San Francisco Music Director Michael Tilson Thomas:“Zoya is one of the true greats, a true artist, and a true musician.”
Zoya has given numerous master classes in the United States and abroad. For the last twenty years she was a consistent faculty member of the New World Symphony, America’s Orchestral Academy in Miami, Florida.
After retiring from the SFS, Zoya and her husband moved to Nashville, where she continues her musical and teaching career.
