Tiffany Renee Taylor applied to the University of Rochester after poring over the college brochures and making an extensive campus visit. She was thrilled to be accepted and arrived in the fall with a plan. But like many college freshmen, it took some time for her to settle in and feel comfortable.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What made the difference?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI got\u00a0involved,\u201d says Renee Taylor. \u201cThere were opportunities to\u00a0join\u00a0clubs and even start organizations.\u00a0And there were faculty and staff who helped us navigate\u00a0it all.\u00a0The University is like a training ground for leadership.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That training paved the way for a 25-year career in\u00a0human resources, teaching, and consulting,\u00a0working\u00a0with\u00a0educational, corporate, and community organizations to build intercultural competencies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Along the way, she has\u00a0remained as engaged with the University as she was as a student, serving on\u00a0the\u00a0New York City Metro Leadership Council,\u00a0several\u00a0reunion committees, and\u00a0the\u00a0Diversity\u00a0Council.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Most recently, Renee Taylor started a mentoring program with the Douglass Leadership House, which aims to celebrate and raise awareness of black culture, politics, and history.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI realized that\u00a0there were ways in which I and others could offer\u00a0these students\u00a0support,\u00a0because we walked in their shoes,\u201d she says.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAs much as I\u2019ve received from other people, I\u00a0want to ensure that I give back.\u00a0There\u2019s a sense of connectedness that I have to the U of R.\u00a0 And there isn\u2019t anything that they would ask me to do that I wouldn\u2019t do.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
