Introducing Sarah Mangelsdorf, the next UR presidentSarah C. Mangelsdorf, an experienced academic leader recognized for her work on issues of academic quality, educational access, and diversity and inclusion at some of the nation’s leading public and private institutions, has been named the 11th president of the University of Rochester. Rochester represents at Nobel Prize ceremony The groundbreaking work of three scholars with ties to the University of Rochester took center stage last month when pioneering laser scientist Donna Strickland ’89 (PhD) and her Rochester advisor Gérard Mourou formally received the Nobel Prize in Physics. Paul Romer, whose early career tenure-track appointment was in Rochester’s Department of Economics, also received the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences. A new generation in preservation As cofounder of the Young Urban Preservationists, Caitlin Meives ’05 is helping to ensure that preservation itself endures. She serves as the preservation planner for the Landmark Society of Western New York, a Rochester-based nonprofit that maintains and celebrates historical sites around the city. 8 questions about the iZoneJulia Maddox, director of the new Barbara J. Burger iZone at Rush Rhees Library, talks about iZone’s problem-solving philosophy. The iZone is a newly opened 12,000 square-foot-space and program designed to empower students to explore and imagine ideas for social, cultural, and economic impact.
