Arrival of crane marks project milestone
A major step forward for the Strong Expansion Project arrived on September 6, 2024. A free-standing static tower crane was erected on a prebuilt foundation within the construction site. The tower has a horizontal boom with a 360° rotation for moving assembled construction materials onto the new building and its foundation as it is constructed.
Tower cranes are needed in construction projects that have limited access and where standard mobile cranes do not have the reach required to construct a building. The tower crane will lift nearly every component of the new patient tower into place and its primary function will be structural steel and reinforcement bar.
Tower crane facts
- The tower crane sits on a foundation made of 115.5 tons of concrete, 57 cubic yards
- Its foundation will become a permanent part of the completed building
- Height to the lifting hook is 198 feet; total crane height is 219 feet, or about 21 stories tall
- Total reach from the crane tower is 246 feet
- It took 31 tractor trailers to deliver the parts and equipment needed to erect the crane
- The tower crane will remain at URMC for 16 months
