Education and healthcare sectors are a major part of New York’s economy—attributable to 30% of all jobs in the state—and are particularly important in upstate New York.

  • The University is the largest private employer in upstate New York—with more than 39,000 employees between the University and its academic health system. This job creation extends statewide where the University directly or indirectly supports more than 66,000 jobs, representing 1 in every 126 jobs throughout New York State, underscoring its role as an economic multiplier, and generating opportunities extending beyond its physical boundaries contributing to a $13 billion dollar impact.
  • Major capital investments made by the University support steady construction employment and related jobs in the economy. Annual capital investment spending averaged about $324 million over the last five years and in fiscal year 2024 alone reached $383 million. Specifically, for the Strong Expansion Project, more than 85% of the workforce is local labor.
  • The advances that happen within URochester Medicine research laboratories are vital not only for the health benefit to our community, but also for the millions of dollars that the research enterprise attracts. The entire research enterprise has a nearly $1 billion positive impact on New York State.
  • URochester Medicine strengthens upstate New York communities as both a major employer and healthcare safety net. Its community investment includes $308 million in uncompensated care and charity care, nearly $170 million in subsidized services (low- or no-cost prescriptions, pediatric, mental health, and obstetrics care), and more than $175 million in health workforce development—ensuring essential healthcare remains accessible to underserved populations.
