A note from the Dean

Greetings,

Dean Sarah Peyre

As a new academic year commences, I am thrilled to be back at Warner full time after a year-long stint as interim provost for the University. I am grateful for all that I experienced during that time, but my heart was always with Warner and I am enjoying the beginning of this new year back with the students I have missed so much!

As we find ourselves adjusting to our ever-changing circumstances, both in the long and short terms, we’ve more recently been able to turn our attention to our other top priorities here at the Warner School. Here are a few that I am particularly proud of:

  • With the support of our Student Ambassadors and the Director of Equity and Inclusion at Warner, we created the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Library, which will aid in our efforts to promote an equitable, diverse and inclusive environment. This library is open to the Warner Community and located in LeChase Hall.
  • Our Center for Urban Education Success (CUES) has hired its first post-doctoral fellow, Dr. Eleni Duret, who will be partnering with CUES faculty to disseminate research outlining the remarkable transformation that has taken place at East High School throughout its partnership with the University of Rochester. Dr. Duret will also have a partial appointment in the Center for Professional Development and Education Reform (CPDER) where she will continue to assist in implementing anti-racist/anti-oppression initiatives.
  • Professor Kevin Meuwissen has been seeking to improve urban teacher education and retention and better meet the needs of Rochester’s P-12 learners through the implementation of year-long clinical experiences (i.e., residencies) for teachers. He is in the midst of launching a pilot residency program in partnership with the Rochester City School District and Nazareth College School of Education. The program will help position Warner as a key research contributor to this national conversation.
  • Scholarship support provided critical financial assistance through guaranteed 50% school counseling scholarships to help address a statewide shortage. Four of these students were able to participate in a new Counselors in Residency Program – a program designed to provide in-person mental health support during evenings and weekends when the University Counseling Center (UCC) is closed.

We still have much more work to be done and the support of our Warner community is an essential part of moving these and other initiatives forward. I humbly ask you today to consider a gift to Warner. We have many deserving programs that would benefit from your support, and you will make a direct impact on our students as they prepare to change lives in an ever-evolving educational environment. Thank you for your consideration!
