Anna Cooper ’07M (MPH), ’11M (MD) Resident, Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation
Nobody does it better than Rochester—this place and these people fit my personality and lifestyle as an aspiring academic orthopaedic surgeon. Following receiving my MD and Masters in Public Health at Rochester’s School of Medicine and Dentistry, I interviewed around the country to decide where the best fit would be for my residency. Not only did I end up at a place that is a hub for discovery, it also is a collegial, collaborative, and supportive medical community. There is a culture here that is dedicated to best practices for continuous learning. Everyone—professors, deans, administrators, colleagues—is invested in us as clinicians and as people. As I near completion of my orthopaedics residency and move on for my surgical fellowship, I am reflecting on the professional and personal relationships that I built here, and how they will always be an important part of my medical school experience.
I feel honored to have been given an opportunity to train and explore my passion for medicine in such a patient-centered, empowering environment. Thanks to the generosity of resident and fellow alumni, my residency experience has been enhanced with opportunities that may not have otherwise been possible. Without alumni support, I would not have had the exposure to visiting professors and opportunities to attend conferences—which are vital to our knowledge growth, networking, and future career opportunities. I am confident that when I complete my residency here and move on to my next level of career training, I will be an even more well-rounded and knowledgeable physician.
