As independent young adults, most PhD students lack parental support or savings with which to launch their careers. Many bring with them substantial debt from undergraduate study. We lose the best graduate applicants to better-funded peer universities when our financial offers, typically including tuition waiver and a cost of living stipend, fail to compete.<\/p>\n When your gift supports fellowships, you enable our outstanding graduate programs to make strong offers and bring in more students, and you enable students to proudly identify themselves as holders of prestigious fellowships as they focus on their studies rather than on making ends meet. Fellowships are awarded by the central University Office of Graduate Studies based on faculty ratings of the best and brightest applicants across all PhD programs.<\/p>\n The University\u2019s schools and departments invest some operating funds to support our PhD students \u2013 funds that are already stretched thin by faculty and staff salaries.
