The University of Rochester Medicine is home to approximately 3,000 professionals who conduct research on everything from cancer and heart disease to Parkinson\u2019s, pandemic influenza and autism.<\/span><\/h3>\n

[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”10px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_column_text]Collaborating across many centers, institutes, and labs, our scientists have developed therapies that have improved human health in the region and across the globe. On the clinical side, our doctors, nurses, dentists and other healthcare specialists are responsible for nearly three million visits each year.<\/p>\n

Biochemist Lynne E. Maquat, PhD,<\/a> is the founding director of the Center for RNA Biology: From Genome to Therapeutics. Her work exemplifies our momentum in medicine. Maquat recently won the prestigious Canada Gairdner International Award, which recognizes outstanding biomedical scientists who have made original contributions to medicine that increase our understanding of human biology and disease. Faculty and student support are foundational priorities for our academic health system. In addition to neuroscience and RNA biology, two additional priorities in medicine include cancer and musculoskeletal disease and injury.<\/span><\/h4>\n

The Wilmot Cancer Institute<\/strong>
\nThe Wilmot Cancer Institute<\/a> (WCI) is the number one provider of cancer care in New York State outside of the New York City region. With $20 million in NIH funding and an expansive clinical network, WCI is well positioned to develop and deliver life-saving discoveries to people in the Rochester region and beyond.<\/p>\n

As we continue to pursue progressive cancer treatments, we must invest $50 million to recruit and retain the best and brightest faculty, fund promising research projects, foster collaborative science, and advance clinical trials. WCI research benefits people of all ages, including the thousands of pediatric patients treated at our Golisano Children\u2019s Hospital each year.<\/p>\n

This strategic investment in talented people and promising programs will elevate WCI to the ranks of other leading cancer centers in the country and lead to a future in which more patients are not only surviving cancer, but living fuller lives after treatment.<\/p>\n

The Musculoskeletal Institute<\/strong>
\nOur Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation<\/a> is dedicated to, and passionate about, reducing the incidence of musculoskeletal disease and injury and the burden they place on people worldwide.<\/p>\n

We have one of the country\u2019s foremost musculoskeletal research programs, outstanding comprehensive care teams, and one of the largest and best training programs for New York\u2019s young surgeons. We offer 20 clinical programs, many of which drive national care standards.<\/p>\n

The University plans to launch a new Musculoskeletal Institute that will leverage this interdisciplinary expertise.
