ZOOM Video Conferencing and Virtual Meeting Space

What is ZOOM?

ZOOM is a web conferencing tool that can be used to facilitate synchronous online sessions. The system has the capability to establish audio and video connections between faculty and students. 

ZOOM can be used for:

  • Conducting Online or Hybrid Online courses
  • Holding Online/Virtual office hours or review sessions
  • Facilitating student collaborative group work
  • Teaching from remote locations
  • Providing access to the course from remote locations
  • Offering guest lectures
  • Facilitating meetings with participants in remote locations

Please adhere to all University policies with regard to Social Security Numbers (SSN), Personal Identifying Information (PII), and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) in the use of this product.

For Students

Students are not required to have a Zoom account. When students access Zoom from a course, it will prompt them to download the client and provide a "name" by which they will be identified in the Zoom session.

Using Zoom as a Student

If a student wishes to obtain an account, they can do so at http://tech.rochester.edu/services/zoom/

For Instructors

Instructors are required to have a University-hosted Pro account. To create an account, visit http://tech.rochester.edu/services/zoom/

If you are a graduate student who is teaching and wants to use Zoom in a course, you may need an upgrade from the Basic account. Contact the Zoom Super User for your area to initiate this request.

Additionally, your Blackboard email address MUST match the email address associated with your NetID. You can check this by reviewing your record in the Online Directory.
If your email does not match, you MUST change your Blackboard email address in order to link to your Zoom hosted account. How to change your email address in Blackboard.

Reporting Issues

If you experience issues with ZOOM, please report them promptly by sending the following information to UnivITHelp@rochester.edu.

  • Your Blackboard login information
  • Time and Date of your Zoom session
  • Blackboard course from which you accessed Zoom
  • Type of issue (connection dropping, audio, video)
