We in the Center for Community Engagement were\u00a0<\/span>distraught\u00a0<\/span>by the invasion of the Capitol building and the congressional offices<\/span>\u00a0earlier this week<\/span>, yet we\u2019re\u00a0<\/span>not surprised<\/span>. This<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>was the logical conclusion and even the intended outcome of those\u00a0<\/span>in positions of leadership<\/span>, especially Donald Trump, who propagated false conspiracies about the 2020 election to the United States populace.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Furthermore,\u00a0<\/span>we were dismayed to witness the disparities in how the<\/span>\u00a0violent<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>insurgents<\/span>\u00a0were treated by law enforcement officers<\/span>\u00a0at the\u00a0<\/span>C<\/span>apito<\/span>l<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>in contrast to how law enforcement has responded to\u00a0<\/span>nonviolent protestors\u00a0<\/span>for racial justice<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>in Washington, DC, and around the country over the past year\u2014and for decades prior. We recognize that this inequity is deeply rooted in our society and all too familiar to disenfranchised and marginalized groups.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We have much work to do to uphold and advance the University\u2019s Meliora values that we hold dear:\u00a0 equity, leadership, inclusion, openness, respect, and accountability.\u00a0<\/span>We believe in the power of people to effect positive social change\u00a0<\/span>through active participation in established democratic processes and institutions, as well as through non-violent direct action that seeks to make those intuitions ever better and more accountable to the needs of the people.\u00a0<\/span>We\u00a0<\/span>acknowledge\u00a0<\/span>that<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>policies\u00a0<\/span>that have been\u00a0<\/span>(and continue to be)\u00a0<\/span>put in place to\u00a0<\/span>prevent\u00a0<\/span>some (<\/span>notably\u00a0<\/span>people of color)\u00a0<\/span>from having access to these mechanisms of power, and we dedicate ourselves\u00a0<\/span>to advancing equal access<\/span>, and\u00a0<\/span>to\u00a0<\/span>promoting<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>liberty and justice\u00a0<\/span>for all.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We <\/span>uphold\u00a0<\/span>the statement of University President Mangelsdorf<\/span><\/a>\u00a0in response to this week\u2019s attack<\/span>, and we<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0embrace the work of our partner organizations and want to share their messages in response to the violence in Washington, DC, yesterday. These include Campus Compact<\/a><\/span>, the Andrew Goodman Foundation,<\/a><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>540 West Main.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
